Alumni Donations Provide Life-changing Scholarships

Recent donations have allowed Northumbria to provide tuition fee scholarships to seven students from the Excelsior Academy in the West End of Newcastle.

Two of the former Excelsior pupils that alumni donations have supported this year are Malak and Adele. Speaking of her scholarship Malak Hussein, BA (Hons) in Architecture commented:

“The idea of a lifetime of debt was a big worry for me, so receiving the scholarship was a huge relief. It made it so much easier to make the choice to go to University. I’m now determined to get the most I can out of my degree. I really want to get a First, and that goal drives me every day.”

Adele Richardson, BA (Hons) in Geography commented of hers:

“I come from Scotswood, a deprived area in the West End of Newcastle. My mam and dad always encouraged me to go to University, as neither of them went. I saw how hard they’ve had to struggle their whole lives, and I didn’t want that for myself. I wanted to have a better life. Getting the scholarship has allowed me to achieve that.”

In order to show our gratitude for this life-changing support, in August, the Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO) launched an online Donor Roll honouring recent supporters of Northumbria.

We want to be able to support Malak and Adele, as well as continue with this work, in future years. But we cannot do this without the continued support of the Northumbria Alumni and Friends community. If you would like to help us transform the lives of more students, simply donate here or contact our Development Team by calling (+44) 191 243 7073 or emailing peter.storey@northumbria.ac.uk.
