Northumbria graduates secure internships through Graduate Internship Scheme

Lauren Brown and Thea Mitchel-Wren, recently started their internships as careers advisers with CareerWave, a provider of careers advice to schools, colleges and other education providers. Both studied a BA (Hons) in Guidance & Counselling, graduated from Northumbria University in 2021 and are already three months into their new roles.

The internships were made possible through Northumbria Enterprise & Business Support Internship Programme (NEBS2), which is funded through the European Regional Development Fund. It provides funding to small and medium sized businesses in Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, who are looking to recruit motivated graduates on internships of up to six months.

Since the launch in March 2021, 38 graduates have benefited from the Programme. Interns receive a salary of 18k (pro-rata), or above, and internships often result in longer term or permanent roles. From the 150 graduates that benefited from the previous programme, which ended in 2018, 81% were retained by the businesses.

Northumbria Enterprise & Business Support will run until 2023 so there will be plenty more graduate opportunities across a range of businesses and sectors, many being advertised now. To be eligible for the internships you must have graduated since 2019.

Interested graduates can find details of current internships on Northumbria University’s vacancy portal JobsOnline, or by going directly to the Northumbria Enterprise Business Support internship scheme webpages.

Any trading SMEs based in Tyne & Wear that have a business need that could be fulfilled by a graduate can receive up to £4,050 (45%) contribution towards a graduate salary for a six-month internship. To find out more about this exciting opportunity, and potentially identify a longer-term or permanent member of staff, businesses can contact internships@northumbria.ac.uk
