Meet Northumbria's Graduate Futures Graduate Transitions Adviser: Lorraine Morrell

Hello I am delighted to be given the opportunity to introduce myself to you in this month’s e-Bulletin. I hope you have had a good summer and enjoyed some sunshine along the way.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate all of Northumbria University’s recent graduates who are now members of the alumni community. I had the pleasure of meeting many graduates during this July summer congregations. I wish all every success in progressing with employment, and, or further study.

Like you, I am a Northumbria University graduate (MSc Psychology). I have previously worked in both the private and public sector, including Further and Higher Education, with a primary focus on career planning and progression.  I understand there can be many career challenges having experienced them professionally and personally myself from getting my first job, gaining promotions, changing careers, and facing redundancy. Sometimes we need a little support, advice and guidance to help us figure out what it is what we want to do, what can we do, and how we can make it happen, but also, what is our plan B, and, what alternative paths can we take to arrive at our career destination.

I joined the Graduate Futures, Career Planning Team in January 2023 in a new posting, Graduate Transitions Adviser. I work very closely with the Graduate Futures careers professionals and colleagues with career focused activities for final year students and graduates, for example, Careers Fest 23 and Life After Uni...  I also, alongside Graduate Futures Careers Advisers, offer graduate careers appointments to members of the Graduate Futures Careers Club.

Graduate Futures Careers club is available exclusively to Northumbria University graduates for up to five years from graduation. This offers graduate access to Careers Online which is full of helpful careers tools, Careers Flix - designed and delivered by Graduate Futures, vacancy search function, labour market information, and helpful eLearning in bit size chunks including as Disabled Students Programme, and, International Students Programme. As a member of the Graduate Careers Club you can also search for vacancies via JobsOnline and book graduate careers appointments, and quick query appointments if you need a short focused session on improving our CV or cover letter for example.

For further information please see Graduate Futures Information for Graduates.

If you would like to contact the Graduate Futures team in future, please email nucareers@northumbria.ac.uk.

For alumni who graduated in the summer of 2022 you will probably be aware you will soon be invited by Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) to complete the Graduate Outcome Survey.  This is a great opportunity for you to contribute by completing the survey.  The information you provide can help current and future students make informed choices, supports Northumbria University to evaluate and promote courses, and informs Graduate Futures in shaping future career service offer.

Finally, may I wish you all the very best with your graduate future.
