Northumbria University, Newcastle has signed an agreement with Santander Universities to provide students with scholarships worth up to £5,000.

The three year agreement, which amounts to £40,000 annually, with additional support for internships in the first year, will focus on international exchange, entrepreneurial activities and international travel grants for Northumbria students and researchers to go to universities in any of the 20 countries where Santander has higher education partners.

The partnership will also enable Northumbria to further develop and strengthen collaborative links internationally as well as create new opportunities for staff and students. The support will also offer five internships to students or recent graduates of the University to work in a small or medium-sized business.

The agreement was signed by Northumbria University’s Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, Professor Andrew Wathey, and Simon Bray, Managing Director Santander Universities UK, with representatives from Santander and the University witnessing the event.

Professor Andrew Wathey said: "This agreement cements our ambition to collaborate in ways which will benefit Northumbria’s academic community of students and staff.  It will enable the University to provide further support and opportunities for research activities, an area where we are gaining significant strength and international recognition.

With benefits including funding for scholarships, international exchange and study abroad, work placements, internships and other entrepreneurial activities, this agreement will add significantly to the range of our students' educational experiences and employability prospects. I am confident that this partnership will continue to develop and have a positive impact on our students and staff for many years to come."

Simon Bray added: "This agreement with Northumbria will offer many opportunities to both UK and International students and will strengthen the relations between Northumbria and over 1,200 Santander Universities’ partners. This is a long term partnership and at Santander we hope the benefits of it will be felt across the whole university for many years."
