Career Path: Lead Practitioner of Mathematics and Director of The Mathematical CPD Library
Location: Sunderland, UK

After graduating I spent a year upskilling my subject knowledge in maths by completing an Advanced Diploma before then beginning teacher training. Since then I've worked as a teacher of maths in a number of schools in the North East and completed my Masters in Education through distance learning.

Where are you doing now?  Samantha Tallintire

I won a national competition called Let Teachers Shine in 2024 and I'm about to launch The Mathematical CPD Library based on the work I've done. The website focuses on giving primary teachers of maths confidence in their subject knowledge through a series of tutorials.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

I felt the open days showed the warmth and genuine enthusiasm that staff had for their subject.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

There was a mix of all types of study, including practicing industry specific skills.

How connected was your course with industry?

I was lucky enough to secure two placements with solicitors through the University. It was through this work that I realised a career in law wasn't for me. I'm very grateful for these experiences as they were offered early enough within the course to allow me to switch my focus and apply for postgraduate courses without an unnecessary gap year.

What was the best thing about your course?

I loved my degree and learning about the various aspects of law. Trust law was probably my favourite topic!

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career an edge?

I would certainly say in regards to developing my new business, The Mathematical CPD Library, the skills I learnt from my degree have been invaluable.

The ability to read in depth, think critically and write with confidence have been invaluable skills I wouldn't have mastered without my degree at Northumbria.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

I really enjoyed the mix of lectures and smaller seminars. It really allowed you to cement and expand your learning.

What advice would you give somebody who is considering studying at Northumbria?

To absolutely go for it!

How would you describe your time at Northumbria in three words?
