Northumbria University to co-host fifth Newcastle Climate Change Forum

Northumbria University, in collaboration with Newcastle University and Newcastle City Council will host the fifth Newcastle Climate Forum, giving Newcastle’s community a chance to shape a greener future for the city.

The event, taking place at Northumbria's Great Hall in the Sutherland Building on 5 March 2026, from 5pm to 7.30pm, will focus on greening university campuses and enhancing biodiversity across Newcastle.

Through the Collaborative Newcastle Universities Agreement, Northumbria and Newcastle University work together with key stakeholders including Newcastle City Council on joint projects that benefit the city. Discussions at this forum will help feed into the development of future plans across both universities.

The event will open with Newcastle City Council representatives Councillor Juna Sathian and David Trousdale, Principal Advisor for Climate Change and Net Zero. Dr Paul Steadman, Sustainability Manager at Northumbria University will present on greening our campuses, while Northumbria’s Dr Katherine Baldock, Associate Professor in Ecology and Dr Matt Pound, Associate Professor in Physical Geography and Environmental Sciences will discuss biodiversity in urban environments.

The evening will culminate in 'The Great Climate Debate: One Planet, Many Plans', a solutions-focused discussion examining whether current climate action is sufficient. The debate will be hosted by Professor Jane Robinson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Newcastle University, who will be joined by Dr Katherine Baldock, Professor Richard Dawson, Dean of Research and Innovation at Newcastle University, Dr Bonahis Oko, Newcastle University graduate and Sustainability Lead at Canon, and David Trousdale.

The forum is free to attend and open to all. Registration is available via Eventbrite.
