What will I learn on this module?

Within this module you will synthesis your creative knowledge of interior architecture and building adaptation within self-directed and expressive responses to complex, site defined briefs. You will realise two major design propositions that will develop from your individual response to context conditions, typological studies and end user needs that draws upon your research enquiry into narrative, volume, atmosphere and form. Your self-directed approach will develop rigorous responses to building adaptation with cognisance of their impact upon and contribution to the genius of place, as a holistic body of work, from inception to detail and resolution. You will design with ownership of the poetic assemblage of each scheme, whilst exploring individual and imaginative methods of ideas development, communication and resolution. How will I learn on this module?

You will work on studio based design projects within this module, which are taught by individual tutorials and supported by additional workshops, project focused seminars and site visits. Lectures will be used to introduce projects and theories relevant to project work and you will work in groups and individually within the design projects, with increasing autonomy as you develop you own design intent. You will be encouraged to develop your independent learning skills to manage your progress, subject development and areas of personal enquiry and approach, whilst benefiting from peer support and peer learning within the studio environment.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported with weekly guidance during tutorials, where you will discuss the development of your ideas and solutions to the design projects and agree strategies for achieving your design intent. You will benefit from regular progress reviews as formative assessment on an individual and group basis, and are encouraged to participate in discussions about your work, your development and that of your peers. Feedback on formative and summative assignments will be offered in verbal, written and drawn form which will provide advice for further development and a critical appraisal of your work and performance. Directed learning will allow you to research issues raised in tutorials and independent learning will allow you to investigate you own themes, ideas and clarify and control your intent. All project material will be available on the eLearning Portal (ELP) so that you can access information when you need to and we operate an open door policy to help support student learning when it is needed most. The university library offers support for all students through its catalogue and an Ask4Help Online service.

Knowledge & Understanding:

KU 1. Conceptualise and realise an appropriate proposition with flexibility and agility that demonstrates considered judgements of the spatial, aesthetic, technical and social qualities of an idea.

KU 2. Formulate and contextualise interior architecture solutions that demonstrate an advanced appreciation of the influence that history, theory, context and precedence have upon a site specific adaptive proposal.

KU 3. Articulate complex interior architecture solutions that demonstrate an advanced appreciation of the constraints of regulations and the aspirations and requirements of clients or end users.

KU 4. Create a coherent interior architecture solution that evidences an individual attitude of the integrative relationship between its interior, structure, materiality and servicing.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:

IPSA 1. Evidence advanced research and analytical skills with consideration of the influences of the physical, artistic and cultural contexts on a self-managed design process

IPSA 2. Articulate design intent through an authoritative appropriation of manual and digital 2D and 3D visual communication methods and media for a wider audience.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment will take place within regular tutorials and at interim reviews to provide ongoing developmental guidance and reflection within each of the projects, towards all module learning outcomes.

Summative assessment is of the 3 submitted components;

1. Building Adaptation Project 1
KU1, KU2, KU3, KU4, IPSA1, IPSA2, PVA1

2. Building Adaptation Project 2
KU1, KU2, KU3, KU4, IPSA1, IPSA2, PVA1

3. Exhibition Communication

Feedback will be offered in verbal, written and drawn form which will provide advice for further development and a critical appraisal of their work and performance. Moderation of summative assessment will take place in portfolio reviews at the end of the module.





Module abstract

Within this module you will have the opportunity to apply individual attitudes towards interior space, creative reuse and the adaptation of existing buildings via two major design projects that simulate authentic practice and inform the final assignment to presentation your ideas within a final year exhibition to a wider and professional audience. You will articulate a detailed understanding of the relationship between the existing and your proposed alteration within self-directed and expressive responses to complex, site defined briefs with advanced appreciation of context, poetic assembly, form, materiality and environment. You will be encouraged to articulate individual attitudes towards narrative and the manipulation of language, reference and form within a complex spatial programme whilst demonstrating authoritative technological design skills and environmental strategies. You will receive verbal, written and drawn feedback and assessment on your design project work in two ways; formatively within regular tutorials and at strategic stages to provide ongoing guidance and summatively at the end of each project to establish opportunity for reflection and independent learning.
