At Northumbria’s School of Geography and Natural Sciences, we’re driven by one goal: protecting planetary health and building a more resilient future for people and the natural world.

Our subjects are diverse – from geography to chemistry, microbiology to forensic science. All linked by a common purpose. Solving real-world problems and making a positive impact on people and the planet.

LEARN FROM THE EXPERTS

Our internationally leading researchers teach on our range of programmes. You will learn from experts at the forefront of their fields, with cutting-edge insights embedded into your lectures, practicals and fieldwork.

Our research excellence spans cold/frozen climate science, big data analysis, chemistry, biotechnology, environmental science, biomedical sciences, and developmental geography – and our teaching is just as strong.

LEARNING BY EXPERIENCE

Learning here is hands-on. Every course includes extensive lab-based teaching or experiential learning – such as field trips to investigate changing environments, honing forensic skills at a simulated crime scene in our very own Crime Scene House, or gaining consultancy experience with real clients. There are opportunities to undertake a placement; some are built into modules, and some courses give the option to take a sandwich year with a wide variety of organisations, such as Procter & Gamble, GlaxoSmithKline, the Environment Agency and the NHS. These opportunities will help you develop the applied skills, critical thinking and digital literacy that employers are looking for.

STRONG INDUSTRY LINKS

We work closely with industry through our Employers Forum and Industry Steering Committee, regularly review and adjust our teaching to ensure you’re learning the skills and knowledge the world needs next. Our graduates go onto a wide range of careers – from environmental managers and data analysts to forensic scientists and biologists.

Whether you're preparing for a role in the NHS, tackling climate change using computer models or measurements, or researching how to build a more just and equitable society, you’ll find your place here – among a diverse, inclusive community of scientists driven by purpose, curiosity, and care.

ACCREDITATIONS

We’ve built strong relationships with a number of professional and regulatory bodies who accredit many of our courses. This helps keep our course content current and in line with industry standards.
