What will I learn on this module?

The module aims to provide you with the critical knowledge and understanding of the key strategic HRM/HRD aspects required in the modern workplace. It also aims to provide you with a strong awareness relating to how strategic HRM/HRD contributes to the interests of stake holders and adds value to the business.
Within this module you will cover 12 core topics.
These are:
• Strategic HRM and the Business Partner role
• HR planning linked with Recruitment and selection
• Diversity at work and CSR
• Induction and Performance management
• Managing absence at work and promoting wellbeing
• The challenges for practitioners including redundancy management
• Strategic HRD and promoting a learning culture
• OD and change management
• Shaping and managing the HRD function
• The practice of training and developing business needs
• Methods of design and delivery of training including aspects such as coaching
• Evaluation of HRD and ensuring value for money
This module will allow you to develop your resourcing and development skills by engaging with professional sources (for example CIPD factsheets and reports) as well as your researching academic journal articles.
You will gain opportunities to reflect upon HRM/HRD experience gained whilst on placement activity or during study abroad experiences allowing you to integrate them into your ongoing learning activities. For those students without such experiences there will be opportunities to learn from peers and tutors in order to gain confidence in understanding contemporary HRM/HRD.
This module provides you with a range of understanding and skills transferable to HRM/HRD workplaces

How will I learn on this module?

Resourcing relates to that part of Human Resource Management which focuses upon the recruitment and release of individuals from organisations as well as the management of their performance and potential whilst employed by the organisation. Development relates to the process of learning and change in work and employment. It has the purpose of enabling skilled people to perform competently in their job roles.
The lectures provide a theoretical underpinning of module content and are supported by interactive one hour seminar activities. You will be expected to undertake independent research and activities which will be reflected upon in lectures and seminars. This module provides a dedicated tutor support in seminars to ensure that you have reflected upon lectures and fully understood the narrative.
The lectures require you to have undertaken prior reading and research related to the core topics. You will be expected to have both read core textbook chapters and supplemented this with additional research related to the topic (for example, academic journal papers).
Within small-group seminars you will be able to practice and ensure your understanding via a range of activities. These will include group presentations, group case studies and dissemination of academic journal articles and professional HRM/D sources. Tutors will be available during seminar activities to check student understanding and provide additional support.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Support will be provided by the member of academic staff leading this module. HRM/D academics will provide lecture expertise as well as seminar support.
Your module is supported by an e-learning portal which houses lecture materials, assessment details and various support systems and supplementary contemporary HRM/D reports.
You will also be provided with a wide –ranging electronic reading list that comprises of various academic reports, conference papers and academic journal articles that support and supplement the knowledge and skills outlined within the module.
The module assessment consists of a 3,000 word report which requires an analysis and critique of contemporary HRM/D and which concludes with recommendations for HRM/D practitioners in the modern workplace.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
• To develop a critical knowledge and understanding of key strategic HRM/HRD aspects required in the modern workplace. (MLO1)
• To understand and assess how strategic HRM/HRD contributes to the interests of stakeholders and adds value to the business. (MLO2)

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
• Ability to understand and critically evaluate fundamental HRM/HRD concepts and values with the ability to apply these in a real world setting. (MLO3)

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
• Demonstrate a strong awareness of Corporate Social Responsibility and the positive impacts and advantages that can be gained in the workplace. (MLO4)

How will I be assessed?

The summative module assessment comprises of a 3,000 report which requires you to analyse and critique HRM/HRD in the modern workplace and to make evidence based recommendations.
Drawing from theory and practice you will draw upon your knowledge of HRM/HRD topics and be prepared to apply your knowledge in a way that will add value to the workplace.
You will demonstrate your skills of professional and managerial techniques and processes. These will incorporate an ability to apply such skills in a multi -cultural environment. You will use your creative and critical thinking skills for the benefit of organisations and equip yourself for future career and personal progression. Formative assessment will be provided via regular group presentation and tutor/peer feedback sessions.

The summative assessment will address all four MLOs.

It offers an insight into the modern day management of people in the workplace and the importance of effective resourcing activities such as recruitment and selection and diversity. Additionally it showcases challenges for potential managers by researching areas such as managing absence and dealing with redundancy. The development of people at work can be an exciting and rewarding area. This module explores both organisational and personal development concepts and practices relating to workplace development.
You will research and apply your learning in a supportive tutor led environment. Your learning opportunities range from case studies to group discussions to research presentations. The skills acquired are directly transferable to your future careers in HRM/D or in general managerial positions.
