DA6042 - Professional Development, Lifelong Learning and Professional Practice in Occupational Therapy

What will I learn on this module?

You will draw on your learning from previous modules, placement experiences and work-based experience to consolidate your knowledge skills and values (including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, and for those without faith) in preparation for practice and meeting the requirements for registration with HCPC as an Occupational Therapist. You will continue to develop your reflective skills and identify your own areas for development to focus your learning and support your transition to professional Occupational Therapist; learning to assess your own skills, take responsibility for own learning and continual professional development. This will be in line with the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RC0T) Career development Framework (RCOT 2018). This module also considers employability and enables you to identify the next step in terms of applying for posts, professional use of social media and interview preparation. You will reflect on your learning journey in the context of a range of professional practice setting identifying key theoretical constructs alongside a range of research and evidence that supports contemporary occupational therapy practice in the UK. You will explore the concept of clinical and professional reasoning in order to demonstrate your professional knowledge, skills and behaviours in the context of an identified practice setting. You will engage in collaborative working including practice-based teams and experts by experience (service users and carers) to identify areas for service development and the importance of this within the arena of health and social care justifying the role of the occupational therapist. You will consider the value of diverse and cultural competence within your practice and the influence of the professional and regulatory bodies on the development and sustainability of the occupational therapy profession. Engagement with this module will provide you with mentoring skills to support learners in practice as preparation for supervising students as a qualified practitioner.

How will I learn on this module?

This module will focus on professional development as you make the transition for student to qualified practitioner with an emphasis on reflection and continuing professional development. You will learn through a range of blended learning opportunities including online workshops, interactive lectures, seminars and work-based learning designed to help you make the transition to practice with its requirement for life-long learning and continual professional development. An introductory lecture will be utilised to introduce you to key module concepts and the RCOT career development framework to guide a process of self-assessment and action planning for your transition into practice. You will work in small groups and independently to facilitate autonomous learning. Sessions will be led by the module team with contributions from expert clinicians. The student led seminars will promote critical exploration and discussion of learning journey to date. Practical workshops will revisit and consolidate practical practice skills and tutorials will focus on developing your skills in leading a professional discussion underpinned by theory and evidence relating to your chosen area of practice / work area Classroom based sessions will be utilised during consolidation weeks enabling you to synthesise work-based learning , practice placement learning alongside the theoretical and practical university-based sessions.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The identified module tutor, alongside the programme team, will structure face-to-face and on-line learning opportunities to support your learning within the module and to assist you to work towards the module assessment. Your work-based mentor will provide guidance and support in the development of the portfolio alongside the academic team, The module guide, the electronic reading list, and information communicated throughout the module within sessions and on the e-learning portal will all signpost you to resources to support your professional development. following the conclusion of your programme.

2. Critically analyse and evaluate theoretical concepts underpinning occupational therapy and occupational science, specifically the functional nature of humans, Critically debating the impact of culture, equality and diversity on practice;

3. Identify and critically evaluate level of an occupational need using specific occupational focused enquiry and theoretical models and consistently apply occupational therapy knowledge, skills and experience in partnership with the person to improve their occupational balance and performance.
4. Critically debate the relationship between occupation, health and wellbeing and the factors that facilitate or challenge participation in occupation.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment:
• Ongoing formative opportunities to demonstrate practice skills within workshops with peer and tutor feedback
• Ongoing development of professional portfolio

Summative assessment

Semester 1:

25 min oral presentation of a case study generated form your workplace /or practice placement demonstrating your understanding and application of the OT process, including your intervention and evaluation. There will be an opportunity for the assessor to ask questions following your presentation (15 min presentation and 10 mins for questions)
This assessment will contribute 50% of the module mark (MLOS 1-4)


Semester 2 : Section 9 of your professional portfolio
You will present a digital professional development portfolio reflecting the knowledge skills and attributes you have developed during the occupational therapy apprenticeship programme linked to the Royal College of Occupational Therapists Career Development Framework

This assessment will contribute 50% of the module mark (MLOS 1-6)

Module abstract

In this module you will consolidate your understanding of Occupational Therapy in preparation for your transition to a qualified and registered professional. You will be supported by the academic team and your work-based mentor to increase your confidence in further developing your own knowledge and skills of occupational therapy this will be achieved through the structure of the RCOT Career Development Framework, with particular focus on reflecting on your knowledge and skill acquisition to date and the development of an action plan to support you continuing professional development in your first few years as a qualified occupational therapist. In order to achieve this you will reflect on and critically evaluate your own knowledge, skills and values, identifying areas for your professional development and planning/managing your own learning with support and guidance. This module will equip you with skills and experience of self-assessment and Professional Development Appraisal for continual professional development as required by Professional and Regulatory Bodies (HCPC and RCOT). This module will enable you to consolidate your learning as an apprentice to demonstrate the professional knowledge, skills and behaviours required to practice and a registered occupational therapist. The module provides opportunities to critical discuss current and future occupational therapy practice based on your university and work-based learning experiences, consolidate your practical skills, underpin theoretical knowledge and professional judgement and reasoning. This module will provide you with the opportunity to explore the critical cultural, ethical and sustainability issues that impact on contemporary occupational therapy practice and consider how you plan to engage with continuing professional development throughout your future career.
