What will I learn on this module?

This module aims to equip students with a detailed understanding of consumer culture, social deviance and the concept of social harm in order to look at leisure as a legitimate area of criminological enquiry. The module begins by exploring the theoretical underpinnings of criminology’s traditional analysis of leisure, before progressing on to more recent theoretical debates in the field. Students will understand the role of globalisation, political economy and social change in the development of leisure and the rise of a consumer culture, and the importance of developments in the field of social harm to the discipline of criminology. Drawing upon our own research and existing case studies, the module will turn to contemporary social problems surrounding leisure, deviance and harm both locally and globally. This includes but is not limited to: the night-time economy; gambling; social media and new technologies; consumer culture and environmental harm; transgressive risk-taking in urban space; and recreational and image-enhancing drugs.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn in two main environments – a combination of lectures and seminars. Tutor-led lectures will be used to convey core theoretical and substantive material. Seminars will be student-led, as well as more workshop-like in structure with numerous research-tutored and based activities. The more interactive environment of the seminars will be used to discuss, debate, and reinforce knowledge and concepts and to explore examples and case studies of deviant leisure. Supporting resources will be indicated or made available via the eLearning Portal.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

This is a team taught module, with three or four staff members available to support you via lectures, seminars, tutorial hours and email. A comprehensive blackboard site will also be constructed to support student learning. There is also substantial support from library based resources.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:

1. Students will develop an interdisciplinary knowledge of the social, cultural, political and economic context of contemporary leisure.
2. Students will display creative theorisation skills to understand the relationship between forms of deviance, leisure, and harm in a variety of contexts.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3. Students will learn to evaluate key texts, and place these texts in an appropriate intellectual context.
4. Students will learn how to appraise abstract intellectual claims, as they relate to the field of deviance, leisure and social harm.

5. To demonstrate intellectual curiosity, flexibility and openness of ideas when analysing a specific topic.

How will I be assessed?

There is one summative assessment for this module:

A 4,000 word essay.

Students will be asked to critically debate a key aspect of deviant leisure, covered in the module.

In addition to this, students will be required to engage in a variety of formative tasks and receive formative feedback via seminars. These will typically be group based. They will also have the opportunity for formative feedback via tutorials offered by all members of the teaching team.

Module abstract

Informed by the module delivery team’s rich qualitative research in this field, the module will consider the harms and associated criminological issues that emerge from some of the most familiar and normalised forms of leisure and consumption, such as: fast fashion; social media; pornography; gambling; tourism; the night-time economy; and forms of voluntary risk-taking and edgework, to name a few. Drawing upon the most recent theoretical debates in criminology, the module approaches the issue of leisure through the lens of social harm to understand the role of global capitalism, neoliberalism and consumer culture in this broad field of ‘deviant leisure’. While the subject matter of much criminology may be foreign to the day-to-day lives of some students, this module encourages students to cast their criminological imagination toward some of the most routine aspects of their daily lives and consider the problems that emerge from an intense consumer culture and hyper-regulated city spaces.
