What will I learn on this module?

In this module, you will learn how to review, reflect upon, consolidate and extend your knowledge and understanding of cultural topics; and apply them to inform approaches to studio design projects. You will be able to critically evaluate concepts and data from cultural topics, analyse them and frame appropriate questions to identify a range of solutions in various contexts. You will be able to practice communicating ideas and applications of cultural issues in terms that may be appropriate to diverse audiences. On completion of this module, the knowledge and understanding acquired will form part of the broader contextual framework for the study of your professional pathway. You will be encouraged to take increased ownership of your own learning.

How will I learn on this module?

The module is initially delivered through a series of lectures, however it is expected you will also be participating in wider cultural activities. The coursework assignment is a portfolio of a cultural topic of your choice and agreed with the module tutor. This will be an opportunity for you to practice techniques of academic investigation and critical reflection in relation to KA6016 Architectural Research Methods, and KA7013 Student Selected Investigation.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Although it is intended that you will become an autonomous, self-motivated learner, this will be achieved within a supportive environment. The teaching team will provide guidance in helping you to shape your philosophy, perspectives, personal and professional enhancement. You will be encouraged to utilise peer support within the year group, and especially during the presentation phase of your work. The presentation will be formatively assessed to enable you to experiment and practice effectiveness of group communication in a risk free environment. The programme, lecture content, coursework specifications, submission dates, tutorial arrangements, presentation dates and the turnitin process will all be placed on the e-learning portal. Announcements will be posted and automated emails sent to you about any amendments. You will receive written feedback on the content, analysis, balance and communicative quality of the investigations for the final assignment..

Knowledge & Understanding:
KU 1. You will be able to explore the extensive influences on architectural design through the evaluation and presentation of cultural topics of your choice, and appreciate the broader contexts in which architecture may be set.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
IPSA 1. You will be able to demonstrate independent learning through research and critical thinking in order to take increased ownership of your own learning methods and knowledge acquisition.

IPSA 2. You will engage with the breadth and depth of events in your culture and/or the culture of others.

IPSA 3. You will be able to critically examine your chosen topics from a theoretical perspective, evaluate alternative approaches, integrate data of varied types from various sources, employ advanced techniques to generate propositions and reflect on how this work may influence your own approach to architectural design.


Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
PVA 1. You will intellectually engage with the ethical and social responsibilities of academic inquiry.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment: you will present the topic to the module tutor and peers for verbal feedback.

Summative assessment: this module is assessed by one pieces of coursework.

The coursework comprises a portfolio on a cultural topic of your choice . The topic/content and the format will be agreed with the module tutor.

This assignment will be 4000 words +/- 10% or equivalent.

This comprises 100% of the credits for this module and it will test Module Learning outcomes KU1, IPSA1, IPSA2, IPSA3 and PVA1.

Moderation of summative assessment will take place at the end of the module.

Module abstract

This module explores the histories, theories and practices of diverse disciplines, including the arts and technology. This module provides students with a forum to engage with historic and contemporary theory and critical thinking which informs architecture, urbanism and related creative arts. It provides a platform for dialogue, analysis, evaluation and synthesis of ideas and to foster a critical vocabulary. The lecture programme is aimed at generating a lively discourse, which will help you to broaden horizons, increase cultural references in your design work, assist you to articulate reasons for your design decisions, and support your academic development. As an autonomous , self-directed learner, your engagement with the module and its assessment will enhance the knowledge , skills and attributes that are attractive to employers, who value young professionals who understand the culture within which architectural design is created.

Courses starting in 2021 are offered as a mix of online and face to face teaching due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
