The Northumbria Support Bursary for September 2026

This information is for UK/Home students applying to study at Northumbria University on a Full-Time Undergraduate course in the academic year 2026/27.

Successful students will receive £1,500 per year, paid in instalments* throughout years one, two and three, to a total of £4,500.  This additional support will help students focus on their studies and assist with budgeting.  All self-funded students who meet the below criteria will be eligible.

The bursary will be awarded to those currently studying in the academic year 2025/26 at the below institutions who are expected complete in Summer 2026:

  • Middlesbrough College
  • City of Sunderland College
  • East Durham College
  • Bede Sixth Form College
  • Hartlepool College of Further Education
  • Hartlepool Sixth Form College

You do not need to apply for the Northumbria Support Bursary.  Eligibility checks will be carried out post enrolment and those who meet all conditions will be automatically awarded a bursary.

Terms and Conditions

To be considered for the Northumbria Support Bursary you must;

  • Be a UK/Home applicant and eligible to pay Home fees
  • Apply and enrol to study on a on a Full-Time basis on an Undergraduate Course starting at either Level 3 (entry level for an Extended Degree) or Level 4 (first year of an Undergraduate Degree) at the Newcastle Upon Tyne campus, commencing September 2026
  • Be a self-funded student (i.e. not sponsored by an employer)
  • Apply for one or more elements of the Government Student Finance package (for example, Tuition Fee loan, Maintenance loan)
  • Register with Student Finance England (SFE), Student Finance Wales (SFW) or Student Finance Northern Ireland (SFNI)
  • As a Scottish student, register with Student Award Agency for Scotland (SAAS) and apply to be means-tested for maintenance funding, in order that SASS can send your data to Student Finance England
  • Agree to share consent via your Student Finance Provider with Northumbria University

Please also note;

  • If you have applied for your course prior to the 14 January 2026, you must choose Northumbria as your firm choice by 30 June 2026
  • If you have applied after this date, you must choose Northumbria as your firm choice by 22 July 2026
 

*Important Information 

  • Students eligible for the Northumbria Support Bursary 2026 will not be eligible for any other Undergraduate awards
  • If you apply and are successful with an alternative award, you will automatically receive the one of highest value
  • To be eligible you must be starting at either Level 3 or Level 4 (as mentioned above) in September 2026
  • The bursary is awarded to new students enrolling in September 2026 only
  • The Northumbria Support Bursary is awarded as a bank transfer
  • Payments will be made as £375 (25%) by the end of November 2026, £375 (25%) by the end of February 2027 and £750 (50%) by the end of May 2027
  • The bursary will be paid across a maximum of three years and will start from September 2026
  • The bursary is provided on an annual basis, on the condition the successful students progress to the next year of study
  • The bursary will not be paid in placement years or study abroad years
  • If you are required to resit a year or take a break in study, the offer of the bursary will be withdrawn
  • If you defer your place at Northumbria University before the bursary has been paid, the offer will be withdrawn
  • If you decide to leave your course after a bursary payment has been made, the University will not make efforts to reclaim the amount and subsequent payments will not be made
  • The University's decision is final and cannot be challenged; there is no right of appeal
