Choices Together | Years 10 and 11


Choices Together is the perfect opportunity to find out all about being a university student and what Higher Education could offer you in the future. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t thought about college or university – everyone is welcome!

You will get the chance to explore Newcastle University, Northumbria University, the University of Sunderland, Durham University and Teesside University and take part in some great (free!) activities.

Our current university students will be with you every step of the way to help you out, answer questions and make sure you are having a good time.

Who is is for?

To take part in Choices Together you must be in Year 10 or 11 at school and currently be in the care system.

How much is it?

The activities and sessions are all completely FREE! We will also give you a meal at all the sessions so no need to worry about that.

Why should I go?

As well as being great fun, we hope that you will get to make some new friends and perhaps learn a few things along the way.

When is it?

Choices Together last for six sessions, dates and times are below:

Saturday 7 February 2015, 12 noon – 4.00pm, Newcastle University - Welcome session for you, your carer and social worker to introduce you to Choices Together and meet the staff and students on the programme.

Wednesday 11 February 2015, 4.00pm – 7.00pm, University of Sunderland - You will visit Sunderland University for the opportunity to learn more about living on a student budget. With exciting interactive games this session will really get your mind thinking!

Wednesday 26 February 2015, 4.00pm – 7.00pm, Newcastle University – An opportunity to visit two types of accommodation and see actual students cooking their dinner and socialising with flatmates. You’ll discuss the variety of accommodation available and be encouraged to think about how you would choose somewhere to live in your first year of uni!

Wednesday 11 March 2015, 4.00pm – 7.00pm, Northumbria University - Your chance to explore Northumbria University, with a focus on student life you will get to find out what students really spend their time doing!

Wednesday 25 March 2015, 4.00pm – 7.00pm, University of Sunderland – You will have the exciting opportunity to meet a very recent graduate and find out which jobs you need a degree for. You’ll find out how much money you could earn after graduating.

Saturday 28 March 2014, 12 noon – 4.00pm - Celebrate all you have learnt with a VIP experience at The Hancock Museum.

Choices Together | Years 8 and 9

This is a new series of events as part of our Choices Together programme for Looked After Young People. We are offering students , their teachers and carers to join us on a university campus to find out what university is all about. This will be an interactive, informal day- feel free to attend one or all three!

When is it?

  • 20 February - 10am - 2pm | Newcastle University
  • 17 April - 10am - 2pm | - University of Sunderland
  • 29 May - 10am - 2pm | Northumbria University

The Student Recruitment team is available to attend school or college events such as option evenings, parents evenings and career fairs to offer impartial advice regarding routes into Higher Education and guidance on Northumbria University's unique provision of courses.
