When you’re trying to decide which universities to put down as your firm and insurance choice, we realise that top of your mind is likely to be ‘how will my course help me start my dream career?’ All universities provide employability statistics on each of their courses, so you might use this as a starting point. But what else?

There’s a lot that feeds into the employability of a course, and of how employable you will be at the end of it. Some things to consider are:

  • How important is it that your course is practical and gives you hands-on experience? If the answer is ‘very’, then make sure you find out about the amount of time you are taught in laboratory/workshop settings, versus lectures. What facilities will you be using day-to-day?
  • Is your course accredited by a professional body – how important is that to you?
  • What, if any, input do employers have into designing and contributing to your course?
  • Are there any placement or internship opportunities, or the chance to work on industry projects?
  • Northumbria has a great employability record to help you secure your job – our Careers and Employment Service was recently nominated for a national award and we feature in top ten in the UK for the number of graduates entering professional employment*. Our courses benefit from the input of 550 employers and almost 50 accrediting bodies – from help designing the syllabus based on the skills they’re looking for, to guru lectures, real client briefs and placements. Find out how to give your career the edge.
