Am I an Estranged student?
You may be eligible for support as an Estranged student if you are under the age of 25 and have been granted independent student status due to irreconcilable estrangement by your student funding body.
Your student funding body may be one of the following:
- Student Finance England (SFE)
- Student Finance Northern Ireland (SFNI)
- Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS)
- Student Finance Wales (SFW)
Independent student status due to estrangement means your funding body has recognised that you are estranged from your parents or guardians and has assessed your funding without taking their income into account.

Pre Entry Support
Estranged students are likely to be eligible for a contextual offer and one of our Supported Entry Schemes to help you get here and prepare for Northumbria, to find out more please visit the webpage below:
Application Support/Guidance for Offer Holders
- If you need assistance in applying for a course at Northumbria, please contact Applicant Services who will be happy to assist.
Financial Support
- Eligible students can receive up to £2,000 per year through our NU Belong Fund.
Academic Support
- Support with Short Extensions (SE) on your assignments or Personal Extenuating Circumstances (PEC) which affect your assessments.
Wellbeing and Wider Support
- One-to-one appointments with a dedicated student adviser.
- Monthly Newsletter with updates on support and events
- Connections to wellbeing, mental health, accessibility and careers support.
- Connections and referrals to relevant external support
- Connections to external organisations that support estranged young people.
Frequently asked questions
To access support from NU Belong you will need to attend an appointment with a student adviser. During this appointment they will chat through all the support that is available to you and answer any questions that you may have.
A student is classed as independent estranged by Student Finance if they are ‘irreconcilably estranged’ from their parents on or before the first day of the academic year for which they are applying for funding and/or they have had no contact with their parents for a period of 1 year on or before the first day of the academic year for which they are applying. However please note, whilst there is a mention of one year in the regulations this does not mean that every student must have been estranged for a year. It is more about the likelihood of the situation being irreconcilable than the length of the estrangement.

If you are an estranged student, you will need independent student status from your funding body to be eligible for the NU Belong Fund. However, you can still get in touch with us and your student adviser can help guide you through the process of applying for that status.
