Northumbria University Teaching Studies Alumni Celebrate 50 Years!

Before Northumbria University was granted official University status the Coach Lane campus was home to the Northern Counties College Of Education - a teacher training institution.

At a time of expansion, the college took out a ten-year lease on Ridley Hall, near Bardon Mill, and opened to students in September 1967. Ridley Hall housed 68 students for the first year of their courses and all teaching and tutoring was done by either resident or visiting NCC staff. At the time, the venture was regarded as being innovative.

Following a grand reunion 25 years ago, members of the first Ridley Hall cohort have been meeting up for significant events to reminisce on their time spent at the Hall.

The below photo shows the group celebrating their 50th Anniversary of arriving at the college and Ridley Hall on Saturday 7 October 2017. The group marked this momentus occasion by walking the Allen Banks, adjacent to the recently sold hall, and then adjourned to the nearby Bowes Hotel in Bardon Mill in memory of the times when so many of the cohort tramped across the field for a refreshing pint as students.
