Support Northumbria at 'The Big One' Rugby Match

On Saturday 24 March 2018 at St. James' Park, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumbria University are due to play Newcastle University's XV team in a double-header before the Newcastle Falcons take on Northampton Saints in a premiership fixture dubbed 'The Big One'.

During the 1990's the Northumbria University team made BUSA finals on more than one occasion and won the competition outright in 1994 under Martin Corry’s captaincy. This marked the beginning of a new period of success on the field, and the men’s team are currently riding high as overall leaders of the 2017/18 BUCS Super Rugby Championship.

The transition between playing University and professional rugby is becoming more of a viable option with an increasing number of individuals from the Northumbria squad taking this route. This season Northumbria found themselves pushing as genuine contenders to win the League outright and, on the back of this, representative honours becomes much more possible with the likes of Will Muir and Yaree Fantini representing England Sevens. Furthermore no less than five members of Northumbria team have been announced in the England students' forty man training squad ahead of their tour to France.

The Northumbria University Alumni Association would love to see as many alumni in attendance as possible to support the boys at St James’s Park with the University varsity match kicking off at 3pm with the premiership match starting at 5:30pm. Tickets can be purchased from the Newcastle Falcons either online or by calling the Box Office (+44 0871 2266060), for more information click here.
