Celebrating diversity at Northumbria University

Since committing to the principles of the Race Equality Charter in 2020, the University has been undertaking a process of self-assessment against the Charter framework. Throughout November 2022 the University ran a Race Equality Survey for all colleagues and students. The survey responses are currently being analysed to enable us to learn from our colleague and students’ experiences and also to review the ideas that were shared with regards to advancing race equality. Listening groups will take place this year to allow survey themes to be explored in more detail, with findings used to inform our institutional approach to advancing race equality.

Disability History Month 2022 ran from Wednesday 16 November - Friday 16 December 2022, the theme being Disability, Health and Wellbeing. The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Team worked with a number of individuals, faculties, services and external knowledge holders to spotlight research, alumni work, events, personal stories and signposting to support for our disabled community, this was documented through a running blog provided on the staff intranet. Following the creation of the ‘Disability Equality Steering Group’ the University is now taking initial steps towards an application for Disability Confident Leader status.

With a focus on the inclusion of colleagues across the University, the Human Resources Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team would love to hear from any alumni with experience or knowledge in relation to advancing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace, please contact equalitydiversityandinclusion@northumbria.ac.uk.
