Northumbria has established academic prizes with renowned
multi-sector regional, national and international businesses and organisations.
They are also generously donated by individuals including our alumni and
friends of the University.
In addition to their degree, prizes provide students with
valued recognition, celebrate their academic achievement and provide individual
accolade to enhance an early career profile and employability.
Tom and Mary Harrison are delighted to support this pioneering prize to
recognise academic achievement at Northumbria University’s Amsterdam campus.
They both value the importance of the international study experience for
students and these prizes look to celebrate the unique opportunity the new
campus enables.
The ‘Tom and Mary Harrison Prize’ recognises and celebrates academic
excellence by awarding two prizes annually for the ‘best students’ studying MSc
Business with International Management and MSc Project Management.
Tom travelled internationally throughout his career, and through their
own travel experiences they both recognise the transformative impact it can
have. Tom is an alumnus of Northumbria University and strongly believes in
giving back to his university, he also gives his time and expertise to
Northumbria as a University Governor.
The 2019 recipients of the award, Anna-Lena Schotzki and Bonne van Weert, share what winning this prize what
this means to them:
Studying the MSc Business with International Management course at Northumbria
University Amsterdam has been a great experience! Not only did I manage to
enhance my management skills and knowledge, essential for working in an
international environment, but I also learned to further develop and detect
personal competencies. Studying at Northumbria University is not only about
science and learning processes, it’s also about the people. The people you
engage with, who make this experience so unique. Personal and individual
attention is one of its pillars. And eventually, management isn’t about getting
things done, but to achieve goals together with the people you work with. As a
perfect way to end this experience, I won the Tom & Mary Harrison prize for
having the best dissertation of my study programme, with this focusing on the
effect of service quality on brand image perception in the airline industry,
comparing low-cost with conventional airlines.

After finishing my BA in International
Business Administration I decided to apply to the MSc Project Management course
at Northumbria University as the University provided the opportunity to receive
a complete academic Masters degree in only 12 months, a period of time that many
of us can spare to get higher up in our academic and professional careers. Since
starting at Northumbria University I felt supported by all the professors in
both my coursework as well as my professional development. Services such as the
Business and Career Council made me feel like the University truly cared for
the success of its students, something I had not experienced at my previous
universities. During the course I wrote most of my research papers focused on
risk management, which inherently led me to write my dissertation on the
benefits and challenges of Big Data in Project Risk Management, a research topic
for which I was ultimately awarded the Tom & Mary Harrison Prize as a
result of having the best dissertation in on my course. Looking back at my
experience at Northumbria University I can gladly say that I met many inspiring
people, made great connections, and received the best possible support from
both staff, professors, and my many of peers, all of which have prepared me to take
on tomorrow.
