Northumbria awards honorary degrees at University’s summer congregations

In July the congregation ceremonies returned to the University’s City Campus to mark the success of its latest graduates and honorary graduates with ceremonies taking place on Tuesday 12 - Wednesday 19 July 2023. 

Northumbria University awards honorary degrees to individuals who have obtained the very highest standards of scholarship, outstanding achievement, or distinction worthy of national or international recognition in their academic or professional field. They are also awarded to individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to the University in support of its mission. For example, through long and meritorious service, distinction far beyond the usual remit of their role, or through philanthropy in support of the University’s strategic objectives.

 

Rugby League World Cup chief is honoured by Northumbria University

The man at the forefront of the most inclusive Rugby League World Cup tournament in history has been awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law by Northumbria University in Newcastle. Jon Dutton OBE was Chief Executive of the Rugby League World Cup 2021 having been involved in the project since its inception in late 2015, and successfully led England’s bid to host the competition, which kicked off at St James’ Park in Newcastle last October.

Technology expert and online safety pioneer honoured by Northumbria University

A technology industry veteran, who has transformed the lives of people around the world through her global online initiatives, has been awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Science from Northumbria University, Newcastle. Throughout her 38-year career, Baroness Joanna Shields OBE has been at the forefront of harnessing technology to drive social change. She has held executive roles at companies such as Google, Facebook, and Veon, and served as non-executive director of the London Stock Exchange Group and TalkTalk Telecom Group.

Global leader in patient safety and public health honoured by Northumbria University

Recognised as an international champion of public health and health care quality and safety, Sir Liam Donaldson, has been awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Science by Northumbria University, Newcastle. Sir Liam was the 15th Chief Medical Officer for England, and the United Kingdom’s Chief Medical Adviser for more than a decade, from 1998 to 2010. Throughout his time in this historic post, which was established in 1855, he held critical responsibilities across the whole field of public health and health care.
