The photographic series entitled Extraterritorial depicts space launch infrastructure and landscapes from the United States and Scotland, taken during collaborative fieldwork with political ecologist Pete Howson (Geography, Northumbria). Using a converted digital camera and specialist filters, the images block all visible light and only capture light on the infrared spectrum. The resulting images transform bright blue skies into pitch blackness and health green foliage into white, alien landscapes. The images render planet earth as an alien landscape, calling in to question the impact commerically led NewSpace industries have on our relationship to planet earth and legacies of colonisation. This would be a good opportunity to actively involve our RDF student Daniel Walsh in sharing his research within an arts context and to build momentum with critical perspecives on space science research within the larger university. I'd like to host a discussion with Daniel sharing his research and opportunities for Lauren Napier and Pete Howson to discuss the emerging political / legal contexts of commercial NewSpace developments.
