Northumbria to host region's leading sport and exercise academics

Leading academics in the fields of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation will discuss their groundbreaking research at a conference held at Northumbria University, Newcastle.

The ninth ‘Fuse Physical Activity Group Workshop’, which will specifically look at physical activity for the prevention and treatment of long-term conditions, takes place on Wednesday 8th November in the University’s Sutherland Building.

Fuse is the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health, bringing together the five North East Universities of Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside in a unique collaboration to deliver robust research to improve health and wellbeing and tackle inequalities.

The conference will include a talk by John Saxton, Professor in Clinical Exercise Physiology at Northumbria, called ‘Exercise as medicine: an old fashioned remedy for the health challenges of the 21st century’.

Garry Tew, Associate Professor of Exercise and Health Sciences at Northumbria, will also talk about his research ‘Adapted yoga to improve physical function and health-related quality of life in physically-inactive older adults: A pilot randomised controlled trial.’

Ioannis Vogiatzis, Professor of Rehabilitation at Northumbria, is chairing the event. He will also be giving a talk about the effectiveness of tele-coaching to enhance daily physical activity in chronic lung disease.

Professor Vogiatzis said: “The conference is focused on one of the three subthemes of Northumbria University’s Multidisciplinary Research Theme (MDRT) – Integrated Health and Social Care. In particular, the application of physical activity for the prevention and treatment of long-term conditions that is now a central task of the NHS.

“The event brings together experts in clinical exercise and epidemiology to advance our understanding on therapeutic physical activity promotion strategies and give opportunities for collaboration with the North East NHS Foundation Trusts.”

The conference takes place between 9.30am and 4pm and delegates can tweet about the event using #FusePAW.

Northumbria is in the UK top 30 for excellence in sport and exercise science research in accordance with the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, making it the best-rated university in the North East in this discipline.
