Prestigious editorial role for Northumbria law academic

20th September 2022

Russell Hewitson, Associate Professor of Law at Northumbria University, Newcastle, has been appointed as Consultant Editor for the new Conveyancing edition of Halsbury’s Laws of England, due in 2023.

The appointment is recognition of his experience of teaching, researching and writing about the law and practice of conveyancing over the past 30 years. Russell is the immediate past chair of the Law Society's Conveyancing and Land Law Committee. He is author of several books including Conveyancing Searches and Enquiries, and consultant editor of the Law Society’s Conveyancing Handbook. He is also the general editor of Precedents for the Conveyancer, Practical Lease Precedents and Practical Conveyancing Precedents and is the Practice and Precedents Editor of The Conveyancer and Property Lawyer. Russell is the Law Society Council Member for Commercial Property.

Commenting on his appointment, Russell said: “Halsbury's Laws of England covers the whole spectrum of English law and is designed to enable practitioners to answer the full range of questions likely to arise in the course of their work. As the only comprehensive narrative statement of the law of England and Wales, containing law derived from every source, it is regarded as an authoritative encyclopaedia, and I am honoured by this appointment.”

Halsbury’s Laws of England is written by or in conjunction with leading lawyers, both practitioners and academics. It covers every proposition of English law (whether statutory or common law), and is divided into alphabetically arranged titles, making it convenient to use and offering users a wealth of knowledge and experience, and quick and easy research into any area of law . The text of those titles is supplemented by regularly updated annotations: all primary and secondary legislation, all leading law reports, and many specialist series of case reports are monitored for developments which affect the law set out in Halsbury's Laws.
