Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art

BALTIC is a major international centre for contemporary art situated on the south bank of the River Tyne in Gateshead, England and has welcomed over six million visitors since opening to the public in July 2002.

BALTIC x Northumbria University Institute is the innovative partnership between BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and Northumbria University. For ten years, our organisations have worked together with a shared vision to support creative talent development, ‘place-making’, public engagement and artistic excellence. The partnership co-delivers teaching and learning, research and impact activities to further understanding of contemporary fine art practice and to engage students and the public in key debates in the discipline today.

The BALTIC x Northumbria University Institute is a base for world-class teaching and mentorship in contemporary art practice and research, generated by the dynamic partnership between BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and Northumbria University. The Institute fosters research and experimentation in curatorial and art practice through its lively programme of collaborative public events and discussions.

BALTIC Professor Andrea Philips and a network of internationally active artists, academics and curators lead the Institute’s energetic post graduate community, and co-deliver teaching and learning with Baltic colleagues. The partnership also co-produces the Woon Art Prize a generous annual prize aimed at early career practitioners in Fine Art.
