As an award winning professional playwright and director, Steve Gilroy has been producing work on both national and international stages for the last fifteen years.

With a primary focus on new plays Steve spent four years at the Royal Court Theatre, London and has worked with wide range of  playwrights including; Simon Stephens, Roy Williams Sarah Daniels and David Eldridge. Steve relocated to the North East from London to lead the acclaimed MA Theatre and Performance Practice (Academy) Programme and is currently an associate director at Live Theatre as well as Director of Performing Arts Programmes. He has worked with a range of companies since moving to the region, including the Royal Shakespeare Company, Northern Stage and the Gala Theatre, Durham. Steve's play Motherland has won a range of awards including; Scotsman Fringe First, The Stage Best Ensemble Award, The Spotlight Award and the Jack Tinker Spirit of the Fringe Award.

Research Themes and Scholarly Interests

Steve's research as a director and writer engages with issues of social, cultural and political significance.  His most recent, as well as ongoing, research projects adopt a method for theatre making that is rooted in documentary and verbatim theatre.  He also has a research interest in the role of the drama in the development of new writing. This is explored practically through projects with companies including Live Theatre and Northern Stage.
