NORTHUMBRIA CENTRE FOR RESPONSIBLE AI

The Northumbria Centre for Responsible AI brings together the University’s multidisciplinary expertise in citizen-centred AI to focus on how AI should be used in education, government, industry, and wider society.

The Centre’s vision is to shape a trusted AI future through research, education and policy solutions so that new technologies promote greater equity and opportunity for everyone.  We promote and develop an understanding of AI’s strengths and limitations, how it can be used effectively and responsibly and how it could be harmful or misleading. Our focus is on the application of AI in real contexts. The Centre aims to ensure that technology serves everyone, with no one left behind.

By bringing together academics, policymakers, professionals and industry leaders, we provide research-driven insights, and influence policy guidance and best practices that shape responsible AI adoption which tackles real world challenges. Rooted in the North East’s legacy of innovation, we see responsible AI as a force for economic growth, social mobility and a more equitable future in our region and beyond.

At Northumbria University, Responsible AI represents our aim to ensure that artificial intelligence is designed, developed and applied ethically, transparently and in alignment with human rights and democratic values. It promotes scientific validity, fairness, accountability and trust while maximising benefits and mitigating risks. With a focus on real-world applications in education, government, industry and society, Northumbria’s focus on Responsible AI will bring together research, policy and practice to shape a future where technology serves everyone, leaving no one behind. Through multidisciplinary expertise, we aim to drive innovation that enhances social mobility, economic growth and inclusive progress.
