Centre for Responsible AI - Launch Event 2025


Northumbria University has launched their Centre for Responsible AI, a pioneering hub for ethical, inclusive, and citizen-centred artificial intelligence. The Centre brings together academic, industry, and policy leaders to ensure AI benefits everyone in our evolving digital world.

The Centre for Responsible AI is set to become a trusted voice in the region, offering expertise across key areas. These include AI in public sector law enforcement and governance, AI in education and the creative industries, the environmental impacts of AI, and citizen-centred and inclusive AI development. Working alongside the £9 million UKRI-funded Citizen-Centred AI doctoral programme, the Centre is advancing research, policy, and skills development across sectors.

Key Sessions

Opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Marion Oswald and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Andy Long, who reinforced the University's commitment to Responsible AI. Prof. Graham Wynn shared the Centre’s strategic vision and outlined its mission and future goals. MP Chi Onwurah placed the discussion in a national context, emphasizing the UK's need for trusted, responsible AI.

Panels focused on AI in education and skills, with experts exploring AI’s impact in schools, universities, and community programmes—including responsible AI in policing and youth-focused digital literacy. Regional innovation was also highlighted by Phil Witcherley (NECA), who discussed the North East’s role in driving AI-led growth. The event closed with remarks from Cllr Karen Kilgour, who underscored the importance of cross-sector collaboration.
