How to Answer the Competency Questions

The competency questions in your application are designed to support an inclusive recruitment process. We encourage you to draw on examples from your own experiences that demonstrate your abilities in analytical and problem‑solving skills, communication, and resilience.

These examples do not need to come solely from research or academic work, you can also use experiences from group projects, presentations, part‑time jobs, volunteering, hobbies, or personal interests.

A helpful way to structure your answers is the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result), which enables you to provide clear and focused examples.

Q1 – Analytical & Problem Solving:

Choose an example that shows how you analysed information or data, made a judgement based on that analysis, and selected a course of action.

Q2 – Communication:

Choose an example that demonstrates how you communicated effectively to your intended audience, not just that communication occurred.

Q3 – Resilience:

Choose an example that illustrates how you remained persistent when faced with difficulty, how you managed the situation, and how you continued to move forward.
