ART AND DESIGN: HISTORY, PRACTICE & THEORY

UoA 32

BACK TO REF 2021

  • Art and Design at Northumbria is ranked 4th in the UK for research power
  • This is a rise of 6 places compared to 2014
  • Our research environment is rated 100% world-leading (4*) and internationally excellent (3*)
  • 94% of our impact has been recognised as internationally excellent (3*) very considerable or (4*) outstanding

Through critical examination and innovative forms of practice, this submission is united in its core principles of social engagement through creativity, collaboration, participation, and inter and cross-disciplinarity.

These principles have shaped distinctive research outputs ranging from investigations of transglobal exchange in visual and material cultures; experimental forms of exhibition making and curation, to human computer interaction and participatory design. They have resulted in unique interactions across, for example, fields of fine art, science and technology; design innovation, digital and health-care contexts; and between BAME communities and cultural studies’ academics in interpretations of cultural heritage.

Together they inform our research and impact strategy, the nature of our evolving staff and PGR community, and our cross-sectoral regional, national and international engagements.

As a way of articulating the practice-based research undertaken within Art and Design, 60 portfolios of practice were submitted to UoA32.  A searchable repository of these can be found at: http://unnartdesignfolios.com/
