About this course
This course is an open Continuing Professional Development course. In order to book, please follow the booking link, or if not available, fill out the enquiry form and a member of staff will be in touch with you shortly.
This Diploma is aimed at professional health and safety advisors and environmental practitioners. It’s the flagship NEBOSH award and is the most popular qualification of its kind, having been gained by over 10,000 professionals since 1988.
It builds directly on the foundation of knowledge provided by the NEBOSH National General Certificate, which is also offered by Northumbria University.
The qualification is divided into four Units: managing health and safety; hazardous agents in the workplace; workplace and work equipment safety; and application of health and safety management in the workplace.
On this distance learning course, you’ll have the flexibility to do the bulk of studying at home while receiving extensive tutor support. The final exam and assessment will be held in Newcastle.
The Diploma is a professional level qualification that’s approximately equivalent to the final year of a degree. Holders of the Diploma can expect promotion and new career opportunities across a wide range of industrial, commercial and public sector organisations.
Learn from the Best
The course will be delivered by highly skilled and experienced professionals, approved by NEBOSH (the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health).
Teaching and Assessment
As a distance learner, you’ll be provided with a copy of the course text as well as access to our eLearning Portal that contains a wealth of relevant material and sample exam questions. You’ll also be given access to Northumbria’s IT and library systems, allowing you to use resources such as electronic journals, databases and software. Feedback is provided by the course tutor and we provide additional support in face-to-face sessions at the University.
Assessments include written examinations administered by NEBOSH, which must be taken at the University. There are three-hour exams for each of Units A, B and C. The final Unit will include an assessment of your ability to apply your knowledge in a workplace situation.
Give Your Career an Edge
The practical approach of the NEBOSH National Diploma promotes the application of new knowledge directly to problem-solving in your own workplace. As you progress through the course, you’ll increasingly become an asset to your employer, reducing costs by preventing accidents and ill health of employees, without incurring unnecessary expense by over-reacting to trivial risks.
The final Unit of the course will require you to carry out a detailed review of health and safety performance. If done in conjunction with your employer, this is a way to raise your profile in the workplace and add additional value.
The qualification meets the academic requirements to apply for Graduate Membership (Grad IOSH) of Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). This is the first step to becoming a Chartered Health and Safety Practitioner as a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH).
The qualification also meets the academic requirements for Member status (MIIRSM) of the Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).
Holders of either the NEBOSH National or International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and either the NEBOSH National or International Certificate in Construction Health and Safety meet the headline entrance criteria requirements for Registered Membership (RMaPS) of the Association for Project Safety (APS).
Holders of the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety may use the designatory letters “DipNEBOSH” after their name and are invited to the annual NEBOSH Graduation and Awards Ceremony in the year following the successful completion of their award.
Your Future
As well as opening doors to promotion opportunities and new career options, the Diploma will also prepare you for further study at postgraduate level. At Northumbria you’ll be able to undertake master’s degrees such as MSc Environmental Health or MSc Safety, Health and Environmental Management. Both of these can be taken as part-time or distance learning courses.
