Practice Education for Social Workers (Stage 2 PEPS)
October and April each year 14 hours of teaching plus 186 hours of individual and guided learning, as well as supporting a learner in practice for the duration of their placement.

The module team has extensive experience of working with Practice Educators as well as students within placement environments, providing support and guidance though direct teaching and offering tutorial support when required. 

The module has received excellent feedback from our participants, External Examiners and agency partners.

The academic support offered will be individualised in accordance with your plan of study. This will involve you negotiating a learning agreement that will detail the areas of learning and development that will be demonstrated along with negotiating a staged programme of study. Tutor guidance, support and advice will also be provided on a personalised basis; it will be relevant to the topic of study, the researching of it and the completion of your summative assessment for the module. Tutorials and directed study will focus on identifying topics relevant for this specialist role. You will have access to tutors at negotiated times via online forums, email and tutorials. 

Feedback and feedforward to guide future work will be provided through individual and group work sessions throughout the module. These sessions will also support you to generate material, debate ideas and discuss your developing views of key concepts and reflect on your practice helping you identify strengths and areas for development.

The module team will provide face to face/ online academic support during the module. Providing the opportunity for further formative feedback you have the opportunity to submit an annotated assignment plan electronically for formative feedback.

This module will offer you the opportunity to develop further knowledge about the role and skills required to be a Stage 2 practice educator (Practice Educator Professional Standards 2022). The specific details of what you will learn will be directed by your particular learning needs but will broadly encompass the following topics

• Assessment methods:

• Supervisory models, role and skills

• Effective CPD as a Practice Educator

You will engage in critical analysis of your own development and will have the opportunity to design an appropriate programme of learning for yourself, supported by a tutor. You will focus on enhancing your skills and knowledge. Undertaking and successfully completing the module will enable you to develop and use a high level of independent study skills relevant to your topics for exploration.

This module has two assessed components:

The summative assessment for this module will be in two parts:

Part 1: This is in 2 parts

• A 500 word learning plan

• A 2500 word critical analysis of your development as a Stage 2 Practice Educator

(Covering MLOs 1,2,3,5)

Part 2; You will submit a log book demonstrating the achievement of relevant professional educational standards (assessed by a Stage 2 practice educator. This includes the required observation of practice working with a learner. (Covering MLO 4)

Formative assessment and feedback will be a key component of individual tutorial sessions. Written feedback to a plan of the summative assessment comprise peer and tutor feedback built into seminar activities during classroom sessions, and the opportunity to submit an annotated assignment plan electronically for formative feedback.

Written feedback will be offered on the summative assessments.

Classroom based and supporting a pre-qualifying student in practice within your agency.

This module incorporates a research tutored approach in that you will engage with current thinking about your own educational practice. Tutorial sessions will focus on guided exploration of current research on relevant topics such as assessment and supervision. An enquiry-based approach will also be evident, encouraging you to identify and explore research underpinning relevant aspects of this specialist role. You will develop a range of skills in relation to research in relation to research approaches, methods and its role in developing practice. This approach is congruent with the pedagogical approach to the module which seeks to enhance skills in relation to taking responsibility for ongoing continuous professional development as a practice educator.

Our teaching staff are experienced in practice education, have been continuously involved in shaping the policy and practice landscapes of practice education, and actively research in this area.

Successful completion of this module makes you eligible to practice as a Practice Educator Assessor and off-site working, and to act as a Practice Educator for First and Final Placement Students without oversight.
