Practice Education for Social Workers (Stage 2 PEPS)
October and April each year 14 hours of teaching plus 186 hours of individual and guided learning, as well as supporting a learner in practice for the duration of their placement.

This module offers registered social workers the opportunity to enhance their professional development and career prospects by qualifying as a Stage Two Practice Educator. Durning the module you must work with a learner and be supported in practice by a stage 2 Practice Educator Assessor who will assess your practice skills. Working individually with a tutor, you will evaluate your own learning needs in relation to stage 2 requirements, develop an individualised learning plan to respond to those needs and in doing so, demonstrate your ability and commitment to your continuing professional development in this specialist role.

This module will offer you the opportunity to develop further knowledge about the role and skills required to be a Stage 2 practice educator (Practice Educator Professional Standards 2012). The specific details of what you will learn will be directed by your particular learning needs but will broadly encompass the following topics:

• Assessment methods

• Supervisory models, role and skills

• Effective CPD as a Practice Educator

You will engage in critical analysis of your own development and will have the opportunity to design an appropriate programme of learning for yourself, supported by a tutor. You will focus on enhancing your skills and knowledge. Undertaking and successfully completing the module will enable you to develop and use a high level of independent study skills relevant to your topics for exploration.

This module seeks to extend your practice and intellectual skills in relation to your specialist role as a practice educator. Its structure will support you to engage in independent learning. A combination of lectures, seminars, individual tutorials and directed / individual study will be negotiated between yourself and your tutor. Tutorials will be both face to face and electronic. The tutorials act as an infrastructure for the directed and independent study. You will discuss and get approval for your learning plan from your Stage 2 practice educators assessor to ensure the applied study is relevant to your stage of development. Online discussion groups and forums will also be introduced to enhance your learning. You will also make use of library and electronic resources that can aid work-based learning.

Mentoring and assessment of your practice skills will be undertaken by a Stage 2 practice educator provided by your employer.
