Promoting Sexual Health in Healthcare Practice - Level 7 - AC7110
Delivered as part of the Health and Social Practice Framework

Module lead Karen Elton has over 30 years’ experience in clinical and managerial roles and is an ex-specialist nurse practitioner in sexual health. Karen is supported by colleagues across the academic and clinical arena to deliver this module, ensuring contemporaneous evidence and practices throughout the module.

Northumbria is the principal provider of nurse education in the North East of England and was named Nurse Education Provider of the Year (post-registration) for three consecutive years by Student Nursing Times.

We have excellent relationships with partner services in health, social care and social work and our range of CPD provision supports practitioners and managers to engage in professional learning and then examine how this can be integrated in the practice arena. 

Designed by a multi-professional team including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Midwives, Social Care Staff and Medical practitioners our range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is tailored towards individuals who are driving and enabling practice development in NHS North East.

This module is delivered using a blended learning approach via a comprehensive e-learning support package and four days in university for lectures/seminars. Delivery of classroom sessions will be enhanced by local specialists in the field leading the sessions, giving you access to authentic teaching and learning opportunities. You will learn through a combination of seminars, lectures, blended learning, discussions and clinical placements. As the module delivery is intensive, any sessions that you are not able to attend, are your responsibility to ensure you receive the information missed. Throughout the module there is a formative workload associated with the completion of the elearning package. This is structured to a timetable within the module, but will need to be completed outside of your university study days.

Summative assessment

Summative assessment for this module will comprise of two components:

Part One: You will be required to critically analyse and reflect upon the health needs of your practice population, and associated outcomes from quality performance indicators to identify opportunities for the development of sexual health services within a primary care setting

Part Two: will require you to demonstrate safe and effective practice through assessment of competence in your workplace, or placement area (if this is not possible in your own workplace).

This course is based at our Coach Lane Campus where you will have access to cutting-edge facilities with technology embedded through all aspects of your CPD course.

Completing this module will enable you to become a competent practitioner across the integrated spectrum of sexual health care provision. This will enable any nurse working outside of specialist sexual health services to provide a comprehensive service or signpost appropriately.
