About this course

This module aims to prepare primary care nurses to safely and competently deliver sexual health services, within professional, legal and governance frameworks in primary healthcare settings.

During the module, you will critically appraise current service provision to identify health priorities and opportunities to develop practice/service. You will also examine legal, ethical and professional implications that influence the sexual healthcare agenda.

The theoretical knowledge you will gain from the module will enable you to achieve clinical competency in the sexual health area.

  • Contraceptive methods including LARC
  • Emergency contraception
  • Pregnancy decision making
  • Common STIs and STI screening inc. blood-borne viruses
  • Sexual dysfunction and psycho-sexual issues
  • Motivational interviewing/brief interventions relating to sexual health care
  • Safeguarding issues, under-26, CSE, sexual assault
  • Female genital mutiliation
  • National cervical screening training (if required) can be undertaken during the course at no extra cost

Module lead Karen Elton has over 30 years’ experience in clinical and managerial roles and is an ex-specialist nurse practitioner in sexual health.

Northumbria is the principal provider of nurse education in the North East of England and was named Nurse Education Provider of the Year (post-registration) for three consecutive years by Student Nursing Times.

We have excellent relationships with partner services in health, social care and social work and our range of CPD provision supports practitioners and managers to engage in professional learning and then examine how this can be integrated in the practice arena. 

Designed by a multi-professional team including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Midwives, Social Care Staff and Medical practitioners our range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is tailored towards individuals who are driving and enabling practice development in NHS North East.

 

Teaching and Assessment

This module is delivered using a blended learning approach via a comprehensive e-learning support package and four days in university for lectures/seminars. Delivery of classroom sessions will be enhanced by local specialists in the field leading the sessions, giving you access to authentic teaching and learning opportunities. You will learn through a combination of seminars, lectures, blended learning, discussions and clinical placements.

Summative assessment

Summative assessment for this module will comprise of two components:

Part One: You will be required to critically analyse and reflect upon the health needs of your practice population, and associated outcomes from quality performance indicators to identify opportunities for the development of sexual health services within a primary care setting

Part Two: will require you to demonstrate safe and effective practice through assessment of competence in your workplace.

You must be a registered primary care nurse and have previous evidence of level 5 study.
