SP5019 - Strategic Planning for Sport

What will I learn on this module?

You will learn about strategic management and planning, coupled with the frameworks and techniques used in analysing strategic plans. You will focus on the key components of strategy and why they are essential so that you can then critically appraise a sport strategic plan. Topics will include internal and external factors affecting sport organisations, formulating strategic options and implementing and evaluating plans.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through lectures, workshops, and independent learning. The lectures will cover theories and concepts that will enable you to tackle a series of guided exercises. You will work on these during seminar sessions to apply theory to practice alongside real life sport strategic plans. You will undertake practice in developing your presentation skills and obtain tutor feedback on the content and skills.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Support will include feedback from tutors during small-group seminars and tutorials. In addition tutors will respond to questions via the module’s discussion board at the University’s eLearning Portal (eLP) so that the whole group can benefit. Module tutors will use online resources and the eLP to provide support materials. Prior to summative assessments module staff will deliver an assessment briefing session. After assessment one, feed-forward will be provided by staff to assist with assessment two.

3. You will employ strategic planning frameworks and techniques in analysing and addressing the development needs of sports organisations.

4. You will critically appraise the macro and micro factors affecting an identified sport strategic plan.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment: Formal lectures will introduce you to key concepts, which will then be applied within seminars. You will work in groups in the seminars and practice your presentation skills to complete specific tasks using real life strategic plans which will be evaluated by the tutor. Feedback will be given both on the content and presentation performance. This will assist students in preparing for assessment one. To support your learning with assessment two seminars will focus on models for sport development and strategic planning. This will enable you to develop your understanding of the models and how they can be integrated with your chosen strategic plan.
Summative assessment
1: Group presentation, 15 minutes to present followed by 5 minutes questioning. Presentation to evaluate the effectiveness of strategic management and planning behind a recent sport strategic plan. (40%) MLO 1 & 4 Written feedback will be given in relation to the marking criteria, together with feed-forward feedback for assessment 2.
Summative assessment 2: written assignment of 2000 words. Using theoretical models and strategic planning frameworks to analyse a recent sport strategic plan. (60%) MLO 2 and 3 electronic feedback will be given on the script in addition to feed-forward feedback overall

Module abstract

‘Strategic Planning for Sport’ aims to give you an insight into strategic management and planning, the concepts, the frameworks and the techniques. It is essential for you to understand strategy because in todays competitive sport environment direction and funding are directly related to a strategic plan. This module will also help you in level 6 modules in sport facility management and sport event management where you will be looking at the application of strategic components.
Your assessment will focus on real life strategic plans giving authenticity and application to sports organisations. You will benefit from conducting research to produce an internal and external audit of the chosen sport organisation, together with a presentation to develop key skills for future employment.
