What will I learn on this module?
Coaching Skills and Practice’ (SP5010) builds upon concepts introduced in SP0400 - practice skills, practice behaviours - to consider why these are important to the coaching process and how these practices and behaviours can be used to create progressive and transferable outcomes in a series of coaching sessions. This module aims to introduce the concepts of how to create an engaging and positive motivational climate (e.g. self-determination, achievement goals) which influences athletes’ behaviours, engagement, and well-being in sport. Furthermore, you will also develop awareness of how a theoretical understanding of motor skills acquisition can be applied to the coaching process (e.g. cogntive and dynamical systems approaches).
How will I learn on this module?
Following from SP0474 whereby peer group participants are used during the practical in combination with formal teaching methods, here in SP5010 students will link the content previously covered in SP5010 to a range of participants including peers, developing athletes and special population participants in a range of contexts. You will develop their ability to apply theory to practice through a combination of lectures, seminar activities and practical workshops. Taught content is mostly student-led however there is still high involvement and instruction from academic staff. Inclusion of external, industry coaches/professionals from a range of sports/development stages or ability levels. A mix between group peer, on site coaching and self-led external coaching will also allow students to acquire knowledge of a variety of coaching systems whilst concurrently analysing coaching behaviour and practice.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
All members of staff involved with SP5010 will be available for individualised, pre-booked meetings at specified times for students. During these meetings you will have the opportunity to gain support for (but not limited to) module content, feedback relating to formative and summative assessments as well as general enquiries and issues specific to SP5010.
Additionally you will have access to a Discussion Board (found on the eLP for this module) where enquiries and issues relating to the module can be raised with module staff and student peers providing the necessary support across a general forum.

What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. You will demonstrate an ability to understand and analyse sport coach created motivational climates and related theories
2. You will demonstrate an ability to understand and analyse extant motor skill acquisition theoretical models in a sport coaching context
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3. You will develop skills on how to apply key theories of motivation and skill acquisition to create a series of progressive and transferable coaching sessions which promote prolonged engagement and skill development in sport.
4. You will gain professional coaching skills aligned with the UKCC Level 2 Coaching Certificate as a result of the taught and practical teaching material
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
5. You will recognise how a sport coaches behaviours and practice can influence and explain changes in an athlete’s movement coordination and behaviours
How will I be assessed?
1. Summative Assessment:
a. Practical coaching session based on theories of motor skill acquisition in combination with the coach-created motivational climate, includes proceeding viva (MLO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
b. Media presentation (e.g., infographic) and 500 word critical summary: enhancing motivation through coaching practices (MLO 1, 3, 5)
2. Formative Assessment: includes practical coaching of a variety of participants and groups, critical analysis (research-tutored and –research-based of research) of appropriate case studies and in-class individual and group presentations.
You will receive both tutor and peer feedback on the tasks supporting the student/s in their completion of the formative assessments.

Module abstract
Coaching Skills and Practice’ aims to introduce the concepts of how a coach can create an engaging and positive environment which influences athletes’ behaviours, engagement, and well-being in sport. This module will also develop awareness of how a coach can apply the models of motor skill acquisition to the coaching process and different client groups. Taught content is mostly student-led however still high involvement and instruction from research and industry based academic staff. Inclusion of external, industry coaches/professionals from a range of sports/development stages or ability levels and domains. When delivering practical sessions you will link previously learned content already (SP0400) with that of the current module to peer groups, different aged participants, developing athlete/special population participants in a range of contexts (when available). By the end of this module you should be able to demonstrate how a coach can create a suitable environment which promotes well-being and engagement, as well as aide in the progression and development of technical and tactical skills over series of sessions
