KV6012 - Cloud Computing

What will I learn on this module?

This module you will provide foundational knowledge of Cloud Computing whilst also exposing you to more complex cloud services used throughout industry. Cloud Computing allows organisations across all sectors to leverage innovation and business advantage through subscription services. Through the cloud businesses can access key technologies such as file storage, networking, virtual servers and software deployment tools. You will learn the theoretical concepts of Cloud Computing and develop practical skills for using a wide range of services commonly used within industry. The skills you acquire in this module will be applicable to digital roles in all sectors including learning how to scope out a cloud solution, understanding how to manage budgets and resources, learning how to create a virtual server to specific client requirements, and learning a range of programming skills for building and configuring cloud environments. You will also develop skills in critically interpreting current practice, for non-technical colleagues. That is, you will be able to explain the implications of adapting new technologies in relation to their cost benefits to your future colleagues or employees. The assessment will involve designing, constructing, and provisioning an appropriate Cloud Computing resource for a given scenario.

Through a number of guest lectures given by experts working in cloud delivery roles you will have an opportunity to gain insights into the kind of core cloud skills employers require. You will also critically engage with research outputs as part of your research rich learning. The assessment is made of 3 components 1) Practical demonstration of configuring cloud services for a given scenario (60%); 2) A written report (max 2000 words) which demonstrates a critical reflection of your cloud solution (40%).

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through lectures, workshops, and independent learning. The lectures will cover theories and concepts that will enable you to tackle a series of guided exercises. You will work on these during workshops and hands-on sessions in Northumbria’s CIS building computer labs. All software will be cloud-based meaning you will have access to the latest industry-standard software via a web browser.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported by lecturers during the timetabled sessions when you will receive feedback on your work. The University’s eLearning Portal (BlackBoard) offers remote access to all lecture and seminar materials to reinforce your learning. In addition, the university library offers support for all students through providing electronic resources

MLO1 Design, configure and implement a cloud architecture solution for distributing a web-based application.
MLO2 Identify a range of legal, ethical and security risks using cloud services.
MLO3 Evaluate and implement appropriate security measures for a cloud solution based on a given scenario.

Intellectual / Professional Skills & Abilities
MLO4 Critically evaluate the real cost of Cloud Computing based applications and services in relation to the service cost, architecture, and development time.
MLO5 Comparatively evaluate a range of resources from cloud providers and justify choices made for the developed cloud solution.

How will I be assessed?

The main element of summative assessment (100%) will be a final assignment that brings together all your new skills and techniques. The assessment is made of 2 components 1) Practical implementation of cloud services for a given scenario (60%); 2) A written report (max 2000 words) which demonstrates a critical reflection of your cloud solution (40%). You will receive both informative and confirmatory feedback on your assessments.
The practical implementation of cloud services addresses LO1, part of LO2 and LO3. The report addresses part of LO4 and LO5.
On an on-going basis you will also receive formative feedback on exercises you are required to complete.





Module abstract

This module introduces you to the theory, principles and practice behind Cloud Computing. Indicative topics include: Software as a Service, Platform as a Service, Infrastructure as a Service. Theory is followed practical workshops implementing cloud services from a range of leading cloud providers. You will apply the acquired theoretical and practical knowledge in building a substantial project.
