SP7027 - SER PGT Clinical Placement and Professional Practice

The taught content will be delivered and provided in a variety of formats, including lectures and seminars. In seminars, you be presented to and may be asked to present and discuss evidence related to topics such as portfolio development, motivational interviewing and behaviour change. In placement settings, you will gain first-hand experience of working with professionals in a sector related to clinical exercise physiology. You will be able to access materials on the eLP. There will be the opportunity to work in smaller groups with discipline specific members of staff who will facilitate context driven discussion and learning. You will also be set independent tasks informed by key literature to complete outside of class time to further develop your understanding of the taught content.

A placement tutor will help you identify relevant placements, you will also have seminar activities to support your portfolio development with an allocated tutor. You will also be given guidance on how to write a case study. Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP. Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. You will be provided with content verbally and guided through tasks during timetabled sessions. A dedicated assessment session will afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions in class. The Module Leader is there to support you with any queries that you may have about the module content, and all staff members provide tutorial time outside of class time. Module tutors will provide you with the necessary information on how to arrange a tutorial. You will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on your development during the module, and you will receive feedback on summative work to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial. There is also further academic skills support available from the University Library services.

3. Understand how to write a case study and use literature to critically appraise CEP practices in the field.

4. The ability to effectively record and reflect on your practice in clinical and/or community settings, to support your own learning and development.
5. Collect, analyse and critically interpret the resulting data appropriately.
6. Write up your work in the form of a case study consolidating the above and adopting a concise writing style.

7. Demonstrate an awareness of informed consent and individual differences such as age, culture, ethnicity, physical, psychological, educational, religious beliefs, gender, socio-economic status.

Portfolio, case study (2500 words) and reflection (2500 words) – you will keep a record of your 250 placement hours and activities on your placement(s). You will submit this with a case study, introducing the epidemiological and pathophysiological evidence related to the condition, describe your case and key outcomes, and discuss your case in the context of the wider literature and clinical practice. You will also provide a
reflection on your personal and professional development during the placement(s) and identify how you have applied knowledge that you have learned on the programme to your placement practice (MLO 1-7 ).

Formative feedback will be provided during practical and seminar sessions where you will be given tasks to complete such as goal setting and self-assessment.

You will receive written or audio feedback on your summative assessment to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial.?

The clinical placement and professional skills module is designed to develop your understanding of the professional scope and practice of the clinical exercise physiologist. You will complete a placement(s) in a clinical and/or community setting. You will keep a record of your learning and development, whilst on placement, in a portfolio. This will help you to reflect on your practice and identify a case study to write up. Recording professional development and reflecting on practice are important skills that are used throughout professional careers. You will also learn about motivational interviewing and behaviour change on this module. Teaching is carried out by staff that are experts in their respective fields and have strong research backgrounds in clinical exercise physiology. This module aims to enhance your understanding of working in a clinical/community environment and enhance your employability prospects.
