Health and Social Practice (Education) MSc

You will study modules that are designed to develop your skills to critically evaluate and synthesise evidence relating to your area of practice, develop research skills and an extended project that demonstrates your ability to engage in primary, secondary or practice project based research. This will underpin the modules from which the student can chose from leading to a MSc award.

Alongside the base modules in year one ‘Critical Evaluation of Contemporary Practice’ and year two ‘Research Approaches and Methods in Health and Social Practice’ that are designed to underpin your development, our Flexible Award Building Study System (FABSS) encourages students to study from our substantial suite of CPD modules with a clinical, education or leadership & management focus. This facilitates students to build their own award in line with their development needs and stakeholder workforce development plans, leading to a student-centred approach to learning.

You will be taught or facilitated by research active and experienced teaching staff, specialists in the topics you will address.

Staff draw on years of health and social practice experience in their field, bringing their expertise to the classroom with a richness seldom seen in programmes of this nature. Our staff maintain close relationships with our stakeholders and specialist network involvement, bringing this contemporary and ‘real world’ evidence to their teaching practice.

You will have access to our campus facilities both at Coach Lane or City campus, including our substantial library collection that is accessible both physically and virtually and a variety of learning environments to facilitate multiple learning approaches.

You will benefit from state-of-the-art teaching and practice facilities, and from an immersive environment dedicated to the study of healthcare as your module choices dictate using simulation and immersive technologies as appropriate to your learning.

This programme gives you the opportunity to focus on the evidence base for contemporary health and social practice. With a research led approach, the programme explores the evidence in the context of health and social practice and current provision.

You will learn how to search and retrieve relevant literature developing an understanding of what constitutes evidence presented in the literature, for example in preparation for the academic assessments where you are required to utilise literature academically. Learning and teaching by experienced academics emphasises research and this underpins programme content. You will be able to critically appraise your learning and knowledge development during the programme through self, tutor and peer formative review.

The programme team and module tutors will facilitate a range of learning and teaching strategies such as action learning, workshops, seminars and lectures to help you develop knowledge, skills and methods of enquiry so you can learn to appraise and use the research. You also get the opportunity to enhance key skills in a variety of practical sessions dependent on your module selection complementing taught sessions and practice experience.

This programme is designed to support the development of workforce roles and will equip you to enhance both academic and clinical practice knowledge and skills.
