What will I learn on this module?
This module will build on the concepts from year one and introduce more complex skills linked to the proficiency standards outlined in Annex A and B ‘Future Nurse: Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurse’ (NMC, 2018). This will support your practice learning and help you further develop the knowledge and skills you have gained from your year one clinical placements. The module will help you develop greater confidence and autonomy, allowing you to contribute effectively to a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare providers. This skills module will support your learning while you are in practice and provide an environment, within university, to consolidate the skills and knowledge necessary to progress effectively While in university you will also be updating, consolidating and learning new communication and relationship management skills, nursing procedures and elements of patient safety to ensure safe and effective practice.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through a variety of methods, which will include practice learning, Online Supported Learning (OSL), and through engagement with a simulated practice environment. Learning will be supplemented by websites and training packages, which will include access to the department’s specialist Skills4Practice website: https://www.s4pwebsite.com/
Working collaboratively with your peers, to build your knowledge and understanding, your focus will be on the development of intermediate level nursing skills. Practise and rehearsal will help you to explore the complexities of working in teams and introduce you to the team working component of team development, reflecting the realities of delivering effective care for people of all ages in all healthcare settings.
The module will be delivered using using a blended approach of face-to-face practical sessions underpinned by online learning resources contained within the BlackBoard Ultra site. The focus of learning will be on rehearsal of nursing skills to build proficiency. BlackBoard Ultra will be used to provide access to both field essential learning and the opportunity to access learning that supports a greater depth of knowledge beyond your field specific content.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will be supported by a Module Team of specialist nursing lecturers You will receive ongoing guidance and feedback to ensure you are able to engage with concepts of safe nursing practice and health promotion in people of all ages with a range of common health conditions.
You will also be supported via the modules OSL systems in addition to face-to- face teaching and more formal classroom arrangements.
You will be able to contact the module team in person, by email or phone and through BlackBoard Ultra. Skills Plus, the University Library’s collection of online learning materials can be used to support the development of your academic skills. Further support for your learning is provided with a 24 hour IT Helpline and the student support and wellbeing service at Northumbria are excellent points of contact for assistance for queries regarding disability, faith, counselling, mental health support, finance and welfare issues. You can access these services via email on your student portal, by telephone or through the help desk staff based within university libraries.
You will also support each other via peer support, through engaging in discussion and debate to enhance your learning. Additional relevant materials will be available via BlackBoard Ultra. These will include the electronic reading list, PowerPoint presentations, recorded lectures and interactive learning packages. The University Libraries at both Coach Lane Campus and City Campus offer an extensive collection of material, both hard copy and electronic, access to international databases and training in information retrieval. All support will be in line with any Disabled Student Support Recommendations (DSSR).

How will I be assessed?
FormativeAseesment:
You will be guided by the Online Supported Learning to consider the evidence base and best practice approaches. You will be prepared to share your knowledge within the skills sessions throughout the module and engage in peer feedback which you will use to inform the summative assessment. (MLO 1 & 2)
Summative Assessment:
Your summative assessment will consist of an electronic submission of a 2500 word essay on the skills and approaches which support people of all ages in preventing ill health in a range of common health conditions (MLO’s 1, 2, 3 & 4). Electronic feedback will be provided via Turnitin.

Module abstract
Within Nursing Skills 3 you will be inceasing your skill and knowledge level from year 1, developing your decision making and assessment skills. Through learning, rehearsal and reflecting on your past expereinces and knowledge you will be able to enhance your knowledge of multi disciplinary team working and patient safety and your role within this. You will be encouraged to identify the evidence that underpins good practice, to further reflect on your own abilities and to develop increasing confidence and autonomy. You will have the opportunity to study in a simulated clinical environment. As you progress through the module you will continue to reflect on your own performance and illustrate your development of proficiency and confidence.

Full time Courses starting in 2023 are primarily delivered via on-campus face to face learning but may include elements of online learning.
