PT5001 - Assessment and management of movement and function

What will I learn on this module?

This module aims to develop your knowledge, critical thinking and practical skills in the assessment and treatment of clients with disordered movement and function.

You will explore aspects of assessment, planning and prioritising of physiotherapy management strategies. This will include the principles underpinning the safe and effective assessment and management of clients, to justify and use physiotherapy skills to enhance movement and function, according to the individual needs of clients.

How will I learn on this module?

Keynote lectures will provide a theoretical framework for your own independent study and practical workshop sessions will develop treatment skills to address clinical problems causing disorders of movement and function. Seminars, include small group work activities, will be used to explore your understanding of assessment and treatment approaches covered and facilitate the development of clinical decision-making skills.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP. Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. You will be provided with content verbally and guided through tasks during timetabled sessions. A dedicated assessment session will afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions in class. The Module Leader is there to support you with any queries that you may have about the module content. You will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on your development during the module, and you will receive feedback on summative work to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial. There is also further academic skills support available from the University Library services.

How will I be assessed?

• You will receive verbal feedback during seminar and practical activities throughout the module to facilitate your skill development and clinical decision-making.
• You will be assessed summatively by an ePoster and viva. Within the assessment, you will demonstrate your ability to justify your choice of assessment and physiotherapeutic management of a client. The e-poster will be supported verbally by yourself, and include a pre-recorded sample of your management. The ePoster and viva will explore your underpinning theoretical knowledge and appreciation of how your assessment skills complement an overarching patient management strategy. You will receive written feedback on your summative examination performance.

Module abstract

This is a practically focused module, that builds upon the foundation knowledge developed in year 1 and introduces new concepts and principles that will support the assessment and management of movement and function. This module will facilitate your development in determining and justifying both the assessment, and the choice of physiotherapeutic interventions aimed at addressing client’s problems with everyday movement and function. It combines the development of cognitive (clinical reasoning and decision-making) and practical skills (underpinning theory with safe and competent delivery) to enable you to manage clients with disorders of movement and function. Additionally, it prepares you for clinical practice by developing your awareness of and empathy towards some of the challenging issues that face clients experiencing problems with movement and function.
