This course is approved by Social Work England as a course of education to support the development of the advanced knowledge and practice skills required for the specialist, advanced role of Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP).
Applicants to this course must be able to demonstrate that a Local Authority has agreed to sponsor them to complete a minimum of 40 days (300hours) of AMHP practice learning under the supervision of a qualified and experienced practising AMHP. All teaching is delivered in person, at Coach Lane Campus, Newcastle.
At Northumbria University, we are proud to have been supporting the development of AMHPs for over 30 years, providing expert training that aligns theory, values, and practice. Our Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) in AMHP is a one-year, 60-credit programme designed to help you achieve both a professional qualification and an academic award simultaneously. This course is approved by Social Work England (SWE), meaning successful graduates are eligible for Local Authority approval in the specialist practice role of AMHP.
We value the knowledge and experience you already bring to the course and place a strong emphasis on integrating this with up-to-date legal, theoretical, and research-based learning. The course will guide you in exploring AMHP practice as an ethical, relational, and political activity, helping you to challenge discrimination, promote rights, and support autonomy and individual recovery. You will learn how to operate from a social perspective, draw from evidence, and use legal frameworks to safeguard civil rights, and exercise your own independent judgement in autonomous practice.
Your academic and practice learning will be assessed through:
Module 1: a written assignment critically exploring a contemporary mental health theme withing your own practice
Module 2: a mental health law oral examination
Module 3: a portfolio evidencing competencies set out in Schedule 2 of the Social Work England’s Mental Health (Approved Mental HealthProfessionals) (Approval) (England) Regulations 2008 which you will compile over your practice learning opportunity, and a written assignment critically exploring your own practice under the Mental Health Act 1983.
Applications must demonstrate all 5 of the following entry requirements;

2. Previous study at academic level 6 (undergraduate degree)/equivalent or higher.
3. A minimum of two years post qualified practice experience by the start of the programme in September 2026.
4. A personal statement of no more than 1,500 words setting out how you have potential to acquire and demonstrate the AMHP competencies set out in Schedule 2 of the AMHP Regulations (England). Your personal statement should be grammatically written, and reference appropriate literature. You DO NOT need to submit an personal statement is you can evidence that you have previously passed the Northumbria University modules SW0740 Law and Practice for Best Interests Assessors or SW7009 Law and Practice for Best Interests Assessors.
5. Details of proposed practice learning opportunity and AMHP practice assessor arrangements.
We welcome applications from anyone who can meet these requirements. If you are considering studying the PG Cert AMHP under the financial sponsorship of an agency which is not a local authority, or on a self-funding basis, please contact the programme’s academic lead, cat.meredith@northumbria.ac.uk to discuss the practicalities of this before making an application. Northumbria University cannot make practice learning arrangements on your behalf, but we may be able to put you in touch with relevant AMHP Leads for you to have these discussions yourself.

Module Information
The first module introduces key social perspectives essential for AMHP practice. You will explore a range of models and viewpoints on mental health, considering the impact of prevalent themes on individuals using services, their carers, and mental health practitioners. This module encourages critical reflection on service delivery and professional practice. You will submit a 3,000-word case study in which you critically explore a piece of your own mental health practice, drawing on relevant research evidence to deepen your understanding.
In the second module, you will deepen your understanding of the legislative context of AMHP work, focusing on the duties and powers you will hold as an AMHP. The module covers key pieces of legislation, including the Mental Health Act 1983, Human Rights Act 1998, and Mental Capacity Act 2005, alongside related codes of practice and important case law. Learning will be supplemented by self-directed study through our e-learning portal, which provides access to additional resources and interactive materials.
You will undertake an oral examination conducted by a panel consisting of a module academic and a practicing AMHP. This assessment will evaluate your understanding of the legislative and legal frameworks that underpin AMHP practice.
The final module consolidates and extends the knowledge, skills, and values developed in the previous modules. You will apply your learning during a minimum of 40 days (300hours) of Mental Health Act practice, with direct supervision and assessment from a qualified AMHP. Practice learning is complemented by further teaching sessions, where you will explore and reflect on your evolving identity and professional role.
Assessment for this module includes two elements:
1. Portfolio of Evidence: This will document your practice learning, including a recommendation from your AMHP practice assessor regarding whether you have met the statutory AMHP competencies set out in Schedule 2 of the Mental Health (Approved Mental Health Professionals) (Approval) (England) Regulations 2008.
2. 4,000-word Reflective Assignment: This will require you to critically reflect on a piece of your own practice under the Mental Health Act 1983, incorporating relevant research evidence to deepen your analysis and professional development.
Throughout your journey at Northumbria, you'll be guided and supported by a dedicated team of highly experienced academics and practitioners, all of whom are experts in the field of Approved Mental Health Professionals.
Programme Leader: Dr Cathryn Meredith
Cathryn qualified as a social worker in 2001 and practised in a breadth of adult mental health settings and roles as an Approved Social Worker (ASW), an AMHP, and a Mental Capacity Act Best Interests Assessor. Her teaching takes a primary focus on critical and social approaches to mental distress, rights-based practice, and mental health law. As a researcher, she collaborates with people with lived experience to undertake ethnographic, naturalistic enquiries.
Dr Carole Southall
After qualifying in 1987, Carole became an ASW in 1990 and went on to manage a community mental health team and be a Local Authority Mental Health Act Lead. Carole leads Northumbria University’s PG Cert Professional Social Work programme, and her teaching focuses on adult practice and mental health law. Her research uses interpretive phenomenological analysis to explore how practitioners make sense of their own lived experiences.
You will have access to broad range of learning resources including lectures, seminars and skills workshops directly informed by practitioners and Lived Experience perspectives. Our innovative Clinical Skills Centre will enable you to apply your knowledge and practise skills in simulated scenarios to allow you to develop confidence within a safe environment.
Meanwhile, our city campus is home to our University Library and well-equipped working space, The Hub, which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Technology is embedded throughout all aspects of your degree, and you will receive ongoing support through our innovative e-learning platform, Blackboard, where you can access module handbooks, assessment information, lecture presentation slides and reading lists.
Graduate feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many emphasizing the programme’s impact on boosting confidence, knowledge, skills, and the core values necessary for ethical, multi-disciplinary decision-making in advanced mental health practice.
