What will I learn on this module?
Throughout this module you will learn to critically reflect upon the role and responsibility of the teacher as a professional including legislation in education related to the child and family which impacts upon the teacher’s role. You will develop your abilities to reflect upon the different discourses including philosophical, ideological and political perspectives across the relevant age phase(s) of education related to learning and teaching and professional related issues. You will synthesise your understanding of, and reflect upon your personal development as a professional related to your experience in educational contexts across the relevant age phase(s) to enable you to move towards meeting the Teachers’ Standards (DfE, 2012) for QTS, via an (ICT based) professional portfolio. You will be able to use the professional body requirements, literature in the field (including inspection and research evidence) and the taught elements of this module in order to analyse the above to develop your personal professional profiles. Ultimately you will develop your understanding of working within a multi-professional context and the complexities of the relevant age phase(s) and the implications for your professional practice with young children.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through face to face and online lectures, tutorials, individual tutorials and independent learning. The professional tutorial system will support you in your development through the module. You will have lectures, workshops, formative assessment and opportunities to debate ideas. There will be a strong emphasis on our widening partnership with professionals in schools. The lectures will cover policy, best practice and concepts that will enable you to learn and reflect on your professional responsibilities and tackle a series of guided exercises and discussions. You will work on these during tutorials and independently with the availability of Northumbria’s computer labs, which are fully equipped with the latest industry-standard software. In addition, experienced practitioners from partnership schools and educational contexts will discuss their work through some of the lectures.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Successful academic achievement requires a system of robust support and guidance to help you focus on your learning needs. In addition to the pastoral support you will receive, the tutors involved in delivering this module will provide guidance and academic counselling to ensure that you are able to confidently engage with the academic rigour of this module. This dialogue will be face to face in lectures, seminars or tutorials and is an essential aspect of the programme’s assessment for learning strategy. Extensive support is also accessible online as part of the University’s commitment to technology enhanced learning. This employs the use of the e-learning portal (Blackboard including Pebble+) and social networking and collaborative tools.
A central feature the academic support available to you is the service provided by the University Library. This 24/7 service caters for all your learning needs, has extensive access to electronic texts and tutorials that will directly support the development of academic skills aimed at improving your critical thinking and analytical writing.

What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Critically reflect upon the role and responsibility the teacher as a professional including; recent and relevant legislation in education related to the child and family which impacts upon the role.
2. Explore your ability to reflect upon and analyse the relationships between; different discourses including philosophical, ideological and political perspectives in early primary and primary education related to learning, teaching, thinking and creativity and the implications for your practice with young children. .
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3. Synthesise your understanding of, and reflect upon your personal development as a professional related to your experience in educational contexts across the relevant age phase(s) to enable you to move towards meeting the Teachers’ Standards (DfE, 2012) for QTS, via an (ICT based) professional portfolio.
4. Consider the professional body requirements, literature in the field (including inspection and research evidence) and the taught elements of this module in order to analyse the above to develop your personal professional profile including correct use of all aspects of verbal and written Standard English

5. Demonstrate your knowledge, understanding and application of skills necessary for working within a range of multi-professional contexts across the relevant age phase(s), setting appropriate targets for your own development
Due to the professional nature of the programme and the external regulatory body for teachers, all the module level objectives above also contribute directly to your ability to: Move towards meeting the Teachers’ Standards (DfE, 2012) for QTS, via an (ICT based) professional portfolio.
How will I be assessed?
Summative Assessment:
Post-Placement you will prepare a presentation of selected aspects of the Teachers’ Standards for assessment and moderation
(30 min presentation including Q&A – equiv. to 2500 words)
The assessment will be a final presentation that brings together all technological skills and your new understanding(s) post placement. You will choose three aspects of the Teachers’ Standards to demonstrate your ability to reflect upon your current professional development on the issues covered in taught session in relation to your placement experience. Thus demonstrating a synergy between university and the professional aspects of your study.
Your tutors will be looking for, and developing, your ability to discuss robust evidence towards the Teachers Standards (DfE, 2012). High quality formative feedback and reflections within tutorials will encourage interaction and dialogue which will contribute to the assessment of your learning, enabling you can close the gap between and current and desired performance which will contribute to your recommendation towards Qualified Teacher Status. Feedback will contribute to your developing electronic portfolio, ILDP, with a reflection on your learning and signposting further learning and areas for development in your presentations skills.

Module abstract
In this module you will develop your understanding of the roles and responsibilities that impact on the role of the teacher as a professional in relation to the Teachers Standards (DfE, 2012). This module aims to continue to support you in your professional development to critically reflect upon the role and responsibility of the teacher; including legislation in education and related to the child and family which impacts upon your ability to operate within complex educational contexts.
You will develop your ability to reflect upon the different discourses including philosophical, ideological and political perspectives education related to learning and teaching and professional issues. You will learn to synthesise and reflect on your personal development as a professional related to your experience in educational contexts. You will use the professional body requirements, literature in the field (including inspection and research evidence) and the taught elements of this module in order to develop your professional profile as you analyse your own development and devise action plans for future development with the support of your professional tutorial group.

Full time Courses starting in 2023 are primarily delivered via on-campus face to face learning but may include elements of online learning.
