At Northumbria, psychology is more than a subject – it’s a journey into understanding the mind, improving lives, and creating positive change.

As the largest psychology school in the North of England, we offer a dynamic, supportive community where every student matters.  We cover psychology and its various specialisms including health, occupational and organisational, and sport and exercise psychology.

HANDS-ON LEARNING

We want your learning to be embedded in the real world from day one. From your first semester, you’ll get hands-on experience with research. You’ll work in our new purpose-built labs, building confidence in research, teamwork, and communication – finding real answers to authentic problems.

Every student has the chance to take on a work placement in their second or third year – or both. We partner with a range of organisations, including those supporting mental health, brain injury recovery, special educational needs, neurodiversity, and victims of crime. Many of these are in the private sector, offering a valuable insight into different types of care and services.

RESEARCH-LED TEACHING

Our teaching is shaped by world-class research into areas like sleep, nutrition, stress, and behaviour change, aiming to improve everyday lives. You’ll be part of a subject that’s constantly evolving and has always welcomed new ideas and voices.

A SUPPORTIVE, INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY

We’re big on support. From the very start, your personal tutor will be a familiar face who teaches and guides you through your first term – helping you feel at home and part of our community.  Psychology is open to everyone – you don’t need to have studied it before – and our high completion and achievement rates show that students from all backgrounds can thrive here.

Our graduates are in demand in a range of careers, from business and HR to mental health and policing, and we ensure that our courses are accredited by the British Psychological Society and provide the first step to becoming a chartered psychologist.

Start your journey with the School of Psychology and shape a better future.
