Leadership and Management

Where are you from?

Washington, Tyne and Wear

Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

I had the chance to do my course at University of Essex in Leeds, however although they were able to offer a distance learning course it was over 4 years. Northumbria offered the same course over 3 years, so when we know you will be paying for the course, that is £4000 cheaper.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

I love Newcastle, what a great place to live and be around, Sunday morning trolls along the Tyne with lunch on the Quayside.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

I believe I am still in ore of the Football stadium, the sheer size of the structure in the centre of town and the atmosphere on a match day is like nothing else in the world - it's electric!

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?

I am a Distant Learner, however, I make an effort to attend our lectures on a Wednesday evening where I can. The whole atmosphere of Northumbria University is calming and welcoming.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?

Apart from the learning, but working in the Business centre, as on any floor, is an excellent, peaceful and unobtrusive environment.

Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?

Claire Hoy, she was an inspiration, as a mature student. I was slightly uncomfortable about the attendance and my abilities to learn independently. Claire's help with this as been unsurpassable.

What is your favourite place on campus?

The Business School without a doubt.

What is the best thing about your course?

The lectures are interesting, I feel as it is a distant learning degree, there is no wasted time in lectures, very much a case of, in, learn and out again.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

Self Awareness.

What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

I took this course to concrete and underpin my own knowledge with up to date theories and methods, however, I am learning so much more. I am looking to semi-retire and help small businesses to achieve their goals and ambitions.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

As Nike would say - Just Do It! I have a son at Leeds University and a son in Northumbria University. Both are doing really well with their degrees, however the son at Northumbria talks so much more regarding support and help, lecturers replying to mails and informative feedback. if you have made the decision to attend University, then why go second class when first class is on offer.

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

I am so much more assertive in the workplace, and confident that I am do thing the right way.

If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?

Interesting, enjoyable, rewarding!

Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?

I have done and will again.
