Our Alumni - Work For Us
What is your name and which degree did you study?
Alexandra Eggleston, BSc (Hons) Mathematics
What made you decide to study at Northumbria University?
I liked the smaller lecture size as I got to know my tutors well enough to feel comfortable approaching them if I had any questions. I loved that Northumbria University was campus-based – it had a vibrant, yet homely feel to it.
What was your favorite thing about studying on your course?
The mixture of different classes meant that, on a typical day, I could be studying statistics papers, but when my brained tired of that discipline, I was able to switch to coding (for example) which required a completely different set of skills.
How supportive were the lecturers and tutors?
Very supportive, they had an open door policy and were often working away in their office well outside of the normal 9-5 hours – their passion was inspiring.
Did you decide to do a placement?
Yes
Where and what was your 3rd year placement?
Global Pre-Meds in Gateshead (and Tanzania, Africa!). I started in a data analysis role (Customer Insight Intern), liaising with both the Marketing and Content teams and providing them data to get a better understanding of their customer and to help steer and adapt marketing campaigns to better suit our audiences (both digital and non-digital). After working at the company for only 2-months, I was invited to work out on the product (medical shadowing for aspiring, young Medics, Midwives, Dentists etc.) in Tanzania. This was a complete culture shock and forced me out of my comfort zone. The experience was invaluable, and upon returning to the head office in Gateshead to resume my original role, I was equipped with a stronger insight into our customer-base which further aided my work.
What skills and experience did you gain from your placement?
The placement taught me that even though I was studying a technical degree, my strongest skills are my soft skills. My time at Global Pre-Meds reignited my passion for meeting new people and challenging myself. It reassured me that my post-graduate job options were not solely restricted to a Math's Teacher, Statistician or Finance. Since graduating, I have completed the BAE Systems Graduate scheme and now have a team of five employees. Although a daunting step in my career, I can thank my placement for my improved confidence in my ability to adapt to new challenges.
How did the placement support your studies in your 4th year?
The first part of the placement (Customer Insight Intern) taught me to really consider how I display statistics and data clearly. Sometimes a simple bar chart is all that is required to convey a message. I have also learnt the importance of clearly stating any limitations in research.
How did your course prepare you for life after University?
The course taught me that I will always have to commit time and research into finding answers. Just like in a difficult math's question, my working life has had many hurdles and at times a solution seems impossible. But through patience and seeking support, you always get there in the end.
