Learning Disability Nursing BSc

Rholyn Jacinto 1What made you want to get into nursing?

I grew up knowing I’m going to be a nurse. When I moved here from the Philippines, I knew then that I was ready to go to university – it felt like it was ‘now or never’.

Why did you choose to Northumbria?

I was a care worker at a home in Newcastle and had a patient with learning disabilities. His family told me about learning disability nursing. I enquired about it at university and I got really good feedback from people who said Northumbria was one of the best places to go. And they were right.

What have you enjoyed most about the course?

The whole course was really rewarding. I have met amazing and inspirational people both from university and placement. It’s great how lecturers, mentors and even patients have been very supportive throughout my training.

How did they help your career?

Being able to apply what we learned from university into the ward during placement has strengthened both my clinical and interpersonal skills. Before the course has finished, I had several job offers both from private and public sectors. I now work in a forensic unit with patients who have learning disabilities. It’s actually one of the places I went to on placement
