Our Alumni - Work For Us
Where are you from?
I’m from Hull. “It’s never dull in Hull”
Why did you choose Northumbria Design, and what did you know about us before you applied?
I knew it had a good reputation and outstanding links with industry. The decision to study at one of the top universities for Graphic Design was a no brainer.
What do you most like about Newcastle, and how do you find the city?
I like that it’s such a diverse place. That everyone is really friendly and there’s plenty to keep you busy everyday.
How do you find the cost of living in Newcastle?
Going out on a night is really cheap, but otherwise food shopping and clothes cost the same as pretty much anywhere else outside London. Eating out can be cheap to if you look around!
Did you find the Northumbria Design welcoming?
It was very welcoming. I was given a tour of the Design School and they couldn’t do enough to ensure that I was comfortable.
How do you find your tutors and the staff within Design?
All members of staff are really helpful and will spend as much time as necessary to resolve any issues or problems you may have.
What are the facilities like?
The facilities are first class. Although it can get a bit cramped at times in the studio, you have everything you might need for a project all on one floor.
What do you like most about Northumbria Design?
Northumbria Design is modern and doesn’t feel out-dated.
Tell me a bit about your course?
Our course is varied and really busy. We’ve flown typography inspired kites, created an identity for a TV channel, a Pantone project and taken type for a walk to name a few.
If you had to pick an object to represent your course, what would it be and why?
A key. It can take you anywhere you want to go but you’ve got to make use of it.
What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date during your time with us?
Do your work on time. Don’t procrastinate and leave it till the night before or even worse the morning of hand-in.
If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?
Fascinating, stressful, rewarding
If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?
If your prepared to work hard and reap the rewards. Come here you won’t regret it. If not, start looking at other universities.
What are your plans now and for the future?
Get a good degree. Go travelling. Work for an agency abroad in Germany or Switzerland.
What skills would you say you have gained/improved since the start of your course?
Time management. Punctuality. Book binding. Work efficiency. How to cook scrambled eggs and burn toast everytime without fail.
What new knowledge of your subject area have you learnt so far on your course?
Typography.
How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria Design?
Attending Northumbria I have learnt how to think clearly and express myself briefly and precisely. Time is a crucial factor influencing all factors of modern life.
