NHS Trust Nursing Internships

Embarking on a nursing career is an empowering and rewarding journey. At Northumbria University, we are dedicated to nurturing this journey with our leading, innovative nursing education.

We are delighted to offer our MSc Nursing Science Registered Nurse (Adult, Child, Mental Health, or Learning Disabilities) programmes, designed in collaboration with the fresh 'Future Nurse' standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). This programme is tailored to support individuals from all undergraduate backgrounds, helping them transition seamlessly into the realm of healthcare professionals.

Our programme demands 500 hours of practical care experience and an additional 700 hours of theoretical learning, cumulatively amounting to 1200 hours of Recognised Prior Learning (RPL). We understand that most applicants from non-healthcare backgrounds might face challenges in meeting these prerequisites. Addressing this, Northumbria University has forged strategic partnerships with the Gateshead, Newcastle, Northumbria, and CNTW NHS Trusts to provide paid internships. These internships are specifically designed to help you amass the essential skills required prior to the programme commencement in January.

The immersive experience you will gain from these internships will equip you with the knowledge and competence to apply for any specialisation within the programme. As a support worker intern, you will be exposed to diverse healthcare environments, including adult, child, mental health, and learning disability services. Once you've accrued 500 hours of real-world experience and can exhibit a minimum 2:2 in your previous undergraduate honour’s degree (in any subject) and have English and Maths (A-C or equivalent i.e., Function skills level 2), you will be eligible to enrol in the MSc Nursing Science programme.

This pioneering initiative not only endorses the 'Nursing 50k' manifesto but also enhances access and participation for entry onto our pre-registration master's level programme, spanning two intensive, full-time years. Importantly, each NHS trust provides different access opportunities, allowing you to amass the requisite 500 hours flexibly, via the staff bank or staff pool, either part-time or full-time.

Your future in nursing starts here. Join us in helping shape the future of healthcare and make a tangible difference to people’s lives.
