Overview of Support

At Northumbria, your mental health and wellbeing matter. As a student, you’ll have access to a wide range of support options — from self-help resources you can explore in your own time to dedicated one-to-one appointments with our wellbeing professionals.

University life can be exciting, challenging, and full of change. That’s why we’ve created this overview: to help you see the support, information, and services available to you throughout your studies, so you can find what works best for you whenever you need it.

As a Northumbria student, you'll have free access to SilverCloud – a range of online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) based programmes available whenever you need them. Work at your own pace, choose the programmes that suit you best, and access interactive, evidence‑based tools for stress, anxiety, depression, resilience and more, at any time of day or night.

Throughout the year, we offer group workshops and short courses on topics like resilience, stress management, and more. Plus, there's a wealth of self-help resources including online guides and articles on wellbeing topics for you to explore whenever you need them.

You’ll also be able to access our Peer Wellbeing Advisers – fellow students who run supportive, informal groups on campus to help you look after your mental health. They’re involved in a variety of wellbeing‑themed events throughout the year, promoting a positive campus culture and helping to normalise conversations about mental health so students feel confident knowing where and how to seek support.

At Northumbria you have access to free, confidential, short-term therapeutic support to help you succeed at university. You'll work one-to-one with a qualified mental health practitioner to develop a personalised Wellbeing Plan based on your needs. We even offer outdoor therapy sessions if you'd prefer to talk while walking in nature.

About our practitioners:

Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners: Offer practical support using CBT-based techniques to help you manage things like anxiety, low mood, or stress. They work with you to build skills and strategies so you can feel more in control of your wellbeing.

Counsellors: Provide a safe and confidential space where you can talk openly about what’s on your mind. They support you to explore your experiences and feelings at your own pace, helping you find clarity and ways forward.

Mental Health and Practitioners: Support students who may be experiencing more challenging mental health difficulties. They provide a safe space to support with assessments, safety planning, and connecting you to the right services, so you feel supported and not alone.

Connecting with others and getting involved in activities is one of the best ways to support your mental wellbeing. At Northumbria, you'll find:

Northumbria Students' Union offers its own range of wellbeing support, including advice drop-ins, student-led mentoring, and various support groups. You'll have access to peer support from fellow students who understand what you're going through.

Physical activity is a proven way to improve mental wellbeing and reduce anxiety – plus it's a fantastic way to meet people and try new things. Northumbria Sport offers everything from fitness memberships and exercise classes to club sports and volunteering opportunities. Whatever your fitness level or interests, there's something for you.
