Impact Case Studies

Our work has been rated as world-leading for its impact by REF expert panels, who assess the quality of research in UK higher education institutions.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the UK's system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions.

It is a process of expert review of work by panels made up of senior academics, international members and research users. The panels assess factors including the quality of the research outputs and their impact beyond academia. Impact is defined as an effect on, change or benefit to the economy, society, culture, public policy or services, health, the environment or quality of life.

The Research Excellence Framework first took place in 2014 and is being conducted again in 2021.
